2020.09.23 23:35 celeritas_poe 25 [M4F] Anywhere - Looking for awesome person to explore the universe with!

I want a relationship where we become both best friends and romantic partners. I want to grow and explore the world with you, with both of us actively trying to connect closer and figure out all the awesome things we can do and be together. I hope eventually we'll be able to share everything without hesitating or holding back, and fulfill all the dreams we have that need or become better with a partner. I want to laugh and play games and travel and cuddle and eat/cook amazing food and see amazing things and be vulnerable and hike and have deep conversations and go skydiving and all kinds of things with you. I hope you'll join me on my adventures, invite me to yours, and we can come up with even more together!

A few things about me:
In the past I've wanted to be a Lego designer, violin soloist, professional Go (board game) player, and economist. More recently I decided there was more magical stuff happening in machine learning, so I left an econ PhD program to switch to that. Right now I'm a student and researcher in a lab that's broadly in AI for social good. Also a wannabe entrepreneur with a startup in progress.
I'm highly skilled at procrastination. Sometimes awkward, and rehearse conversations way too much. I once knowingly applied to a top 3 PhD program with 10 pages double spaced writing sample when the requirement was 15, got in anyways, and then turned them down. I once tried learning snowboarding, took off my wristguards on the last run of the day because they were uncomfortable, and promptly broke my wrist. I've had people wonder how I'm doing so much stuff, but they don't know how secretly lazy I am. One time I tried to jump over the net while messing around on a tennis court, sort of landed on top, and broke the metal cable that holds it up (but I did get to the other side!). I'm smart except when I'm not, which is often :P
I love games of all sorts (computer, board, card, ...). Also enjoy tennis, bouldering, and skiing. Sometimes movies, tv/anime, cooking, and more... Got a scuba license last year but haven't put it to use yet with the pandemic. Once played violin in Heathrow Airport for fun.
I'm in the US for now but will move to Canada for PhD when pandemic permits. Not super keen on having kids. Not religious. 5'6'', A bit under 140 lbs. Hair and beard length varies depending on how lazy I am, and recently I've been pretty lazy :P Happy to exchange pictures if you want.

If this resonates, I'd love to hear a bit about you and your dreams! I want to be excited about getting to know you, wherever it may lead, and for you to feel the same way about me :) What are you like, and what makes you awesome? What do you dream - whether in life or in a prospective date - and what makes you happy?
Hope you have a great day!

32.4k YOLO $NCLH 15c 01/15/2021 with DD inside YOLO
I'm leaning very bullish on cruiselines for October.
Politics:
  • Trump administration will try to push a biotech firm to release good news for COVID vaccines before election. He also said that a vaccine could be available around the election time.
https://www.fiercepharma.com/vaccines/pfizer-sees-mostly-mild-to-moderate-safety-profile-phase-3-covid-vaccine-study
  • JPow and Mnuchin join forces to testify against congress to pass the stimulus bill.
https://stansberryresearch.com/articles/mnuchin-and-powell-signal-willingness-to-work-with-congress-on-providing-more-support-2
Pfizer (PFE):
  • PFE will try to reveal whether the vaccine works or not by end of Oct. If the trials show that the vaccine is promising, vaccine production will pursue the following month. Also claims that that their trials aren’t rushed and assures that their trials outcome will not have been influenced by the US election time horizon.
“The phase three trial is expected to include up to 30,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 85 across 120 sites globally, including 39 U.S. states, the company has said. If it is successful, they expect to submit it for final regulatory review as early as October. They plan to supply up to 100 million doses by the end of 2020 and approximately 1.3 billion doses by the end of 2021.”
https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/09/03/pfizer-ceo-confirms-coronavirus-vaccine-trial-may-have-results-in-october.html
  • PFE’s trials are reasonable and test subjects are well diversified.
https://www.statnews.com/2020/09/12/pfizer-and-biontech-announce-plan-to-expand-covid-19-vaccine-trial/
  • PFE’s vaccine trials have been advertised more than ever compared to all of its competitors. PFE, imo, is the most reputable firm for vaccines - unlike MRNA and GILD (and other biotechs) that produced vaccines only to be questioned profusely about their low-effort, shady testing methods.
NCLH ops:
  • NCLH will start sailing again starting Oct 31 along with other cruises. Caveat: sailing might be pushed out to a later date due to the pandemic.
“Much of the cruise industry, including Royal, initially suspended sailings until mid-April only to extend it several times. Most cruise operators now say they don't expect to be sailing again until at least Oct. 31.“
https://apple.news/ANG6R8Ys6Rci0gV-icYDo0w
  • NCLH partnered up with RCL to strive towards a COVID-free cruising experience by establishing air-tight cleansing protocols.
https://www.cruiseandferry.net/articles/healthy-sail-panel-provides-recommendations-to-us-cdc-1
  • I chose NCHL over CCL and RCL because I believe RCL's price is slightly inflated and CCL seems to attract a lot of bad news compared to NCHL. Airlines seem to attract a lot of bad news as well. NCHL has the most optimal risk-reward imo.
Sector Rotation:
  • Tech had its pump, and therefore, people wont easily jump into companies that are obviously inflated due to the election fears. However, the companies that are reasonably priced are the companies that are currently being fucked by COVID (airlines, cruise, malls, restaurants, casinos, etc.) as their historical data is fairly priced in. Institutional and retail investors alike will jump into any of these companies when they’re presented with good news; and hence, it’s likely that there will temporarily be an overreaction to the good news inflating these prices.
Other Biotech’s Progress and Timeline:
  • AZN might be able to deliver vaccines as early as October if trials yield good results
  • NVAX starts its Phase 3 in October
  • MRNA might wait until end of the year to inform of vaccine effectiveness
Positions and the Play: Hold NCLH 15c 01/15/2021 for all of Oct (or at least until the vaccine news). $15 is a great strike because it acted as both the support and resistance for several weeks a few weeks back. If the vaccine news comes out, gauge the market carefully to find a good closing time. If there’s no vaccine pump, just close at the end of Oct. Assuming the price remains stagnant, it’ll only leave like 10%~30% dent on your current position. You also have Nov 5 - NCLH earnings that would hedge against your long calls. The risk-reward is very worth it.

2020.09.23 21:10 MikeOfThePalace One Mike to Read them All: “The Seventh Perfection” by Daniel Polansky, the literary version of a concept album

If I were to describe this book in on word, it would be intriguing. I’ve never read anything else by Daniel Polansky, but I’m certainly interested to do so now.
(Assuming I can ever get Mount Readmore under control)
(Yeah, that’ll totally happen any day now)
Anyway, this book takes place over the course of three days (which is a setup I find I really love - ironic given my long standing love of epics like Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time). The main character has returned from training on a remote island to serve as a high ranking servant of the God-King. She was training to obtain the Seven Perfections - 7 physical and mental disciplines honed to perfection, and something very few are able to obtain.
Some time after arriving in the city, during a time of festival celebrating the anniversary of the God-King's ascension, she receives a gift from an unknown benefactor - a locket with the image of a woman. Hey attempts to figure out the truth behind the locket lead her into dangers and intrigues touching on the God-King himself.
It's a good premise for a book, and Polansky does a great job with the pace of the reveals. He teases things well and does a wonderful job raising the stakes and the tension.
What led to me comparing this book to a concept album? Each chapter is one encounter with someone the protagonist had over the course of the three days. Most people we see only once, though a handful pop up a few times.
All we ever get as readers - EVER - is the dialogue of these other people who aren't our protagonist. No description, no actions, and none of the protagonist's dialogue. Just half of each conversation. I'm dating myself here, but it kind of felt like the cutscenes from the Half-Life games.
It's weird. I can't think of any other book like it. But damn if it doesn't work and work very, very well.
Also: holy crap, this cover is gorgeous.
Thanks to Tor and NetGalley for the ARC.

2020.09.23 04:04 throwaway100__ Need help adjusting tax withholding on 2020 W-4 after large bonus to have $0 withheld going forward

I've tried running my numbers through the IRS withholding calculator several times, and it's not handling my bonus correctly. I've already had more withheld than my yearly tax obligation, but it says I'll owe money this year. After I move my bonus to wages and include the taxes withheld from my bonus to "taxes withheld to date" it says I'll receive a refund of $2491. If I slide this down to the minimum possible of $1,570, it says I need to withhold $274 more each paycheck (what?).
TL;DR: I received a large sign-on bonus for my first paycheck and it throws off the calculations for the rest of the year. How can I have $0 federal income tax withheld on every other paycheck this year?
I'm paid monthly. Gross monthly wages are $9333. Here's what my pay looks like this year:
I believe I should be able to adjust withholdings by changing line 3 (or 4b?) on my W-4, but I'm not sure how to calculate this. If I just put some huge amount like $100,000 will I have nothing withheld going forward? Or can I just claim exemption (does that cause problems if I'm not actually exempt)? Thank you!

In this article, we will show you the TOP 5 hockey goalie gloves that we find to be available. Your goalie hockey glove is one of the essential equipment you need to hold your puck away from the back of the net. Hardly anything feels the same as flashing your leather and robbing anyone to take care of you, and you must have the right catcher.
📷
While cost is an essential factor when deciding what glove to choose, your fitness, comfort, safeguards, reliability, and flexibility should be taken into consideration.
You can not only pick pucks with it, but could even be in the wrong end of slicing sticks and even the rare edge for skating.
Warrior Ritual G4 Pro Hockey Goalie Glove
Warrior Sports is brand new for 2018, announcing the fourth version of the Ritual line that dates back to the 2012 Ritual G1. Building on the massive G3 success, the G4 is designed to provide the lightest equipment on the market with the best performance, feature, and durability.
📷
The G4 glove features HyperComp upgrades across the glove, starting centrally, to provide an even higher level of palm security but still protecting the snapshot. Warrior has managed to keep the AxyFlex system throughout the T of the glove that is tucked deep into the boundary of the thumb and finger side of the glove, as part of the closure of the glove.
With the T structure staying the same, the T was always slightly cut down on the perimeter and even improved along the Spine to give Warrior the overall best shape and visual presentation. Moving to the back of his glove, the backhand design was changed by Warrior to look similar to a GT contact.
📷
This helps the target to make more internal and external changes. Yet you find a cleaner look, with further changes in the back of your hand and fingertips, when you remove your glove.
The G4 gloves still come with removable palms that have adjustable breaks and degrees, but the technical courses between the palm and the back of the handle has been increased.
The G4 Pro has upgraded internal foams like HyperComp, similar to the Warrior Ritual G4 Senior glove. The Warrior Ritual G4 Pro Sénior is the glove for you, if you’re a goalie who looks for the lightest glove on the market with a ready-to-use feel and handheld palm.
HyperComp’s improved center provides elite safety while helping to weight the entire glove. The inside of your glove can be opened and adjusted to make this glove your perfect style! The Ritual G4 has a stock liner of 75°, but can be exchanged for a coating of 60 or 90° according to your preferences.

Hockey Goalie Glove Vaughn Velocity VE8 Pro Carbon XP

Vaughn’s Velocity VE8 XP Pro Carbon glove is an entirely improved pace glove that goalies have never before enjoyed. This glove packs a punch with a single-part mango style, break angles, split double pockets, and carbon fiber safety.
📷
The latest graphic is clean, bright and provides a wide range of custom colored areas. The glove diameter is 45 “long and wide for the shooter.
The NHL is the highest legal. The wide-open glove offers full coverage of the large circular shape. In combination with a free mango pattern, this provides the shooter with an optimum angle and presentation.
Despite slip grip and glove protection inside the handle, you can feel maximum grip within your palm. The strap includes adjustments to fingertips, backhand and wrist with a bracelet that has a padded neoprene to comfort and to refrigerate.
The latest design has reduced weight to provide a very light feel at the level of efficiency. In the palm-and-thumb-base, the VAS high impact foam padding ensures the pro palm protection with a game-ready sensation. For many Vaughn high-end goods, it is possible to heat up for a custom fit and fast break in the increased carbon efficiency.

First 2 Glove of the CCM

The classic CCM Premier has all the features that are common and adds double tea bags to help you keep track of the puck. You get full security and coverage with a one-piece cuff and thumb, and D30 security provides a more protective layer for your hands.
A revised hand-cutting technology provides the fit during the last Premier Glove, providing you with a fast and painless machine split and a glove in the toughest games.
📷
It is a classic and popular CCM thumb for finger 60° break that’s tested and true and performs very well with Premier II. Double Tea Layout also lets you track the puck and gives you high visibility in a large pocket.
CCM’s patented protective foam on pads and trousers is added to the Premier II, providing compact but excellent hand and wrist protection.
CCM’s Premier II Pro grab glove is the perfect mix of familiar sensations and advanced technology. The most powerful feeling and opening glove is a well tested and proven breaking angle with a revamped strap system.
The glove for the 590 corner split is well established. The Premier II handkerchief with a familiar feeling continues this tradition, over the years over many goaltenders.
An all-new friction system complements the great feel with the back of the handle, which enhances agility and comfort with a fast snap and introduces D3O technology to the palm to improve stinger safety.
On the last 2 CCM gloves, we saw the D30, and it has proven to be one of the best and most convenient security available. This handle also has a double pocket for enhanced pocket visibility and superior pad tracking.

2X Goalkeeper Catcher Bauer Vapor

Bauer’s Vapor 2X catcher has a 60-degree break for full hand closure, while the pocket depth is built without bounces or pop-outs for ease of catching. It stays here while the ruck is in the glove.
The handle has been reduced so that the wrist is moving more, and the rebound control is successful. For protection, durability, and stability, Bauer uses its famous lightweight but stiff Curv Composite material in the glove.
📷
The composite design also helps to maintain the shape of the handle year after year. The singlet pocket is very flexible and ready to play while the nash palm is an additional bonus.
The wrist strap is quick to adjust and comes with extra padding, which gives it additional protection and mobility. With the quick Velcro strap, your palm can be maintained securely, and the interior Thermo Max Liner works well to absorb water and sweat.
The Bauer 2X catcher is a pro-level glove appropriate for any age and level of competence. It is very comfy and flexible. Although it is a lightweight glove, it provides the highest protection. The caught is cheap and one of the best offers on the market.

G4 Goalie Catcher Warrior Ritual

Warrior’s G4 Catcher Ritual has been built for safety and efficiency, a beautiful, lightweight model. It’s an adjustable glove that can shift the corner and the fitness.
You can also easily change the handle, finger holes, and backhand area to wear it as loosely or firmly as you want. The glove also comes with a removable pad when adjusting the angle of separation.
📷
The 75-degree liner is supplied, but if you want, you can opt to go with 60 or 90 degrees. Pucks can easily be caught in the grave, full pocket of the glove, without flashing, and its shape is well maintained. The reinforced structure of a catcher provides more than adequate protection to withstand a puck and stick and provides a lot of versatility and moveability.
The Warrior Ritual G4 is available in different colors, offering performance, durability, and protection for all objectives, irrespective of the level of competition. It’s medium-priced, well known.

Will you need a regular or full right goalie?

You just have to determine what hand you’re supposed to catch to learn what. Naturally, because you know already what side you are feeling the most comfortable with, this isn’t a big concern, but it is information you need to supply when purchasing a goalie.
So, if you want to catch with your right hand, and hold the goalie to the right, go to the goalie’s usual captors, while people who find with the right hand carry the goalie’s stick to their left have a full right goalie glove.

Which size do I need a goalie catcher?

The sizes of a catching glove are various in four categories: older, intermediate, younger and younger. Next, calculate the hand length from the heel to the center of the palm, followed by the following diagram as a size guide.

Will I have to buy a used catcher or another goalie?

The response is not only for trapped but for other ice hockey goalie masks (such as blockers, leg pads, goalie helmets, chest guards, leg guards…). There is a false explanation for this case. There are a lot of high-quality goalie gloves out there if money is not a problem for you. When you are on a budget, then you can still go for a new one. However, you can pick from it to do a similar job on the ice.

Conclusion

Goalie equipment is a highly individual option. One or two tees? Stretches or boa to lock your hand? What amount of shutdown do you want? Both of them are individually tailored, and we hope our article has helped you to find a glove to avoid your rucks. We don’t think that you can go wrong choosing this list with so many elite gloves currently available.

Expect weekend lag report. "Daily case counts reflect newly reported cases and may represent cases that were tested in the preceding days, which could significantly impact the count on days when a relatively large number of laboratory reports arrive in one day." SNHD confirmed they are not counting COVID-19 antibody positives into their COVID-19 positive case counts.
Majority of information is pulled from Southern Nevada Health District's COVID-19 dashboard and historical reports.
Our positives have slowed down, our recovery rate continues to rise (85+% range), but our hospitalizations are increasing. Protect our vulnerable and continue to practice good hygiene habits, including wearing a mask to prevent asymptomatic spread as mandated by Governor Sisolak (onus is on businesses, which we want to keep open, but Metro will not enforce it; OSHA is responsible for mask enforcement by fining the business). To report a non-compliant business through the state, call (702) 486-9020 or (775) 688-3700.
Doctors are doing convalescent plasma therapy treatments and are seeking plasma donors to help those in need. One plasma donation can help five patients. Blood donors can get the antibodies testing done for free.
FDA states 144 trials of therapeutics are underway to treat COVID-19. 457 more are in planning stages. None have been approved. Remdesivir and Dexamethaaone are FDA approved for emergency base use.
Nevada was approved for the 24-hour test procedure. FDA has approved a 30-minute and a 5-minute testing procedures. UNLV provides the main COVID-19 testing services. The first at-home testing kit was FDA approved on 5/15.
Testing sites require an appointment; some may need to be scheduled by your primary care physician or another authorized provider.
City Serve coordinates testing sites throughout the valley. Testing is only on Saturdays. Schedule a no-cost test here: https://cityservelv.org/
The antibodies test was approved by the FDA a month ago. UMC, E7 Health and local laboratories are able to conduct antibodies testing. Cost is normally $149+, but your insurance may reimburse you for the test. Check your coverage first. Vitalant/Universal Blood Services will do a free antibody test for any eligible donors.
UMC is able to process 4,000 tests per day. It is encouraged for anyone to be tested. Symptoms are no longer required. Appointment is required.
UMC's testing sites are inside Thomas & Mack Center and Cashman Field Center. They can do 1,200 tests per day, Tues-Sat 8am to 4pm. No symptoms, insurance, or citizenship required for testing. Must schedule an appointment online through UMC's website (www.umcsn.com). A staff member will contact you back to schedule your appointment. According to their reps, there is no limit how often you can get tested. Sites are walk-in, appointment or walk-up. Both sites now use the self-nasal swab test kits.
UMC updates COVID-19 test guidelines:
New guidelines are to save test kits for those exhibiting symptoms.
Expanded drive-thru testing:
See all testing locations on the SNHD website.
All CVS pharmacy drive-thru locations also do testing, no cost should be associated with this test. Validate with your insurance. If no insurance, there should be no charge.
Four months ago, the first vaccine was tested. More than 160 vaccine prototypes are being tested. Clinical trials of the vaccine were administered three months ago. Phase 1 & 2 of trial vaccines have completed with positive antibody results. Phase 3 clinical trials started with 30k volunteers; large test size of 3k vaccine test trials in the UK. Africa started their vaccine trials two months ago. Multiple sources stating to expect an FDA approved vaccine by end of the year.
Of the 100+ vaccines submitted, 22 have made the cut to go through testing and final FDA approval phases (5/15 briefing). The front runner vaccine is conducting human trails (Phase 3 aka final stage), completion date in September. AstraZeneca is prepared to produce 2 billion doses once the vaccine is FDA approved.
Government is working with four vaccine manufacturers who are in the final phases of vaccine trials, all prepared for massive vaccine output once FDA approval is given (7/31). Two of the four have in the final review phases with FDA (8/14).
Phase 3 vaccine trials for Vegas has started. Volunteers can call 702-893-8968. Must be 18+. Administered by the Wake Clinical Research Center of Nevada. Source.
Remain mindful to give our medical community the ability to focus on those in need of their expertise to survive and combat the virus.

2020.09.22 23:25 tegolflife International Amateur Golf Tour First In-Person Tournament/Meetup

Hello Fellow Golfers,
If you haven't heard there is a mainly reddit based virtual golf tournament that I run. Players can sign up wherever they are and compete weekly and bi-weekly. Currently Week 12 of the N.A. Open and the final week of the bi-weekly, point based tournament, The European Cup, are open for registration. The Winter Classic begins 10/8/20. Website to register is here: https://www.iagtournament.com/

Important: You must be a verified player on the tournament to be able to attend. This means that you must register and submit a score for at least 3 rounds on the I.A.G.T. If you are certain you can meet this requirement before the tournament date, please register. I am extending out some trust being so late in the year and winter coming. Reason being is because your tournament handicap will be used to plan pairings and calculate your net score and such. Also helps prevent the issues of sandbagging.
Also, join our chat room on Telegram to chat with some of the people you will be playing with. We talk a lot about golf so prepare those notifications! Here is the chat link: https://t.me/iagt1
If you have any questions comment below and I will try to answer them as best I can.
Can't wait to meet and play with everyone in person!!

2020.09.22 19:49 AntipodalBurrito Trying to turn Node net module chat server into a class.

So one of my classes tasked us with turning a very simple chat server we made into a Class instead of just two simple functions. All it needs is to be able to take in a name, a message, and then create a way for two or more people to talk to each other.
Turning it into a class, however, has been a nightmare. Even though I think I understand the concept I just cannot for the life of me get this down.
This is what I came up with so far. Any guidance – like at all – would be appreciated. At this point I just want it to connect to a port and I can figure the rest out later.
'use strict' const net = require('net'); class ChatServer { constructor() { this.connections = []; // TODO finish this: Do not forget the error on event. this.server = process.argv[2]; this.name = []; this.message = []; this.date = new Date().toISOString(); this.listenPort(); } listenPort() { net.createServer((conn, Socket) => { console.log(`Port running`); connections.push(conn); conn.write("Welcome to the chat app"); }).listen(port, () => { console.log(`App listening on port: ${this.port}`) conn.on('data', (data) => { broadcast(conn.name, data.toString()); }) })
}
/** * Broadcast the message to all the users. * @param from * @param message */ broadcast(name, message) { // TODO: Finish this connections.forEach((conn) => { conn.write(`${name}, ${time} -- ${message}`) connections.push(name); }) } /** * Close the connection. */ close() { this.connections.forEach((conn) => { conn.destroy(); }) this.server.close(); } } module.exports = ChatServer;
And then I have another file for calling this stuff
const ChatServer = require('./ChatServer') // const port if (!port) { throw Error(`You must provide a port for the chat server!`); } let server = new ChatServer; server.port = 3200; server.name = process.argv[1];

2020.09.22 17:51 LJWill91 I am 29 years old, make $170,000 base (plus $30-40,000 bonus and $30,000 vesting stock), live in Seattle and work as a Creative Project Manager in Tech

A little about me: I'm 29, British and Queer :) I moved from England to the US as part of a work transfer three years ago and love Seattle. My life has changed a lot over the past few years, I realized I was gay, moved to Seattle, stopped talking to my toxic mum, had a lotttttt of therapy and moved in with my partner, L. My financial knowledge has gone from 0-60 in the past three years thanks to personalfinance, a few finance books and moneydiariesactive. I'm an open book so ask any qs you'd like! I hope you enjoy!
Section One: Assets and Debt
Net Worth: $283,000
Retirement Balance:
401k $30,000
UK 401k $22,000
Index Funds $155,000
(Tip: I used the bankrate.com retirement calculator to figure out how much I actually need to invest for retirement each year. This really cleared up what I need to invest as a minimum each year to hit my retirement target, before I can decide what to live off and save for shorter term purchases e.g. a house.)
Equity if you're a homeowner:
$52,000 in an apartment in the UK (worth $275,000) that I’m selling right now. I bought it with my ex-boyfriend five years ago and loved living there at the time, but owning it since moving to the US has been a bad idea – it hasn’t gone up in value at all since I purchased in 2015, the rent my tenants pay doesn’t cover the mortgage and it requires lots of costly maintenance.
When I bought it, I received $12,000 towards a down payment from my mum. I have three brothers and I'm expecting brothers 2 and 3 to receive the same, but not brother 1, so I'm planning to give half of the $12,000 to him when the sale goes through.
Also, when I sell, I either owe $0, $15,000 or $30,000 to the US government as part of a tax law that assumes I've made profit because of changing exchange rates. Every accountant I speak to has a different answer, so let's see in January! At some point I'll use the rest of the money towards a down payment for a house in the US.
Savings account balance:
Emergency Fund $17,500
Holiday Fund $7,000
Fun Money $4500 (I might end up investing half of this in index funds)
Fund to cover capital gains tax for my 2020 tax bill $2029
Checking account balance:
I leave $1,500 per pay check in my account for living costs, plus enough to cover my rent and bills. I pay for all of my living costs on an Amex Delta credit card to get points and pay it off in full each month.
Credit card debt: $0
Student loan debt: $0. I completed a music degree in England (this cost $35,000 for three years of tuition, rent and living costs). My parents paid for my tuition, rent and 50% of my living costs, and I worked for them during the holidays to cover 50% of my living costs. Once I joined the working world, I realized how much of a big deal it was that they paid for my education and what a head start it gave me having no student debt. I am very grateful.
Anything else that’s applicable to you:
I had a privileged start, my parents paid for my education and I received $12,000 towards a house down payment. I graduated from University at 21, and whilst I have been financially independent since then, there is an emotional safety net that comes with knowing I could go home to my Dad if I needed to.
After working in England from 21-26, I moved to Seattle with $20,000 saved for retirement, $40,000 in my UK apartment and no other savings. My salary doubled moving to the US and as a result I’ve been able to save a lot over the past few years. A few years ago, my Dad suggested I read How To Own The World. It gave me a really great introduction to lots of different aspects of finance (inflation, saving, types of accounts, retirement etc) so I read a few other finance books, started following personalfinance and have had a massive shift in my attitude towards finances.
Section Two: Income and Income Progression
I graduated with a music degree aged 21 and decided that, although I loved music, I wasn't passionate enough to fight for a career in such a competitive field. Instead, I decided I'd like to explore a career that involved lots of people interaction and could pay well: sales. Since then I've ended up working in sales, marketing and engineering, all in tech.
- 2013 - $25,000 - I joined a tech company as a sales graduate selling Healthcare software. Direct selling wasn't a great match for my skillset.
- 2014 - $37,000 plus $30,000 in commission - After nine months, my manager suggested I moved to a technical sales role in the same company and I was given a $12,000 raise. I loved this role! Lots of presenting in formal sales processes.
- 2015 - $47,000 plus $30,000 bonus - After playing a major part in $3.5 million in sales in one year, I negotiated an additional $10,000.
- 2016 - $70,000 plus $30,000 bonus and a $5,000 stock award (vesting over 5 years) - I moved to a big tech company in a similar technical sales role and my salary jumped significantly.
- 2018 - $137,000 plus $30,000 bonus, an end of year $25,000 stock award (vesting over 5 years) and a one off $25,000 stock award for good performance (vesting over five years) - I relocated with the same company to the US in a marketing role and my salary doubled!
- 2019 - $160,000 plus $30,000 bonus and a $25,000 stock award (vesting over 5 years) - I took a new role in engineering as a Creative PM and my salary increased by 15%. A major driver for moving was being told promotions were off the table in my old team unless you had been in role for three years.
- 2020 - $170,000 plus $42,000 bonus and a $48,500 stock award (vesting over five years) - I was promoted in role and my salary increased.
It blows my mind that I earn this much money for a role that I enjoy so much. I'm very lucky.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: $8,500 per month, after maxing my 401k, contributing $510 to my HSA and healthcare/taxes etc.
Any Other Income:
Having received stock awards every year for the past 5 years, I now have stock vesting every year that adds up to about $30,000 pre-tax. I immediately sell and invest in diversified index funds via Vanguard to minimize the risk that would come with having a large amount of my savings in the same company that pays my paycheck (if the company tanks, I'd lose my job and the stock would plummet in value).
I also receive an annual bonus of between 15-30%. This year it was 27% (an amazing, unexpected surprise), it’s usually around 20%. Last year I invested 90% and spent 10% on a vacation to Japan. This year it was a lot higher, so I invested 66%, saved 21% for moving costs/vacations next Summer and kept the rest as a fun fund.
I also get $1050 in rent for my UK apartment, but the mortgage is $1150, so I make a loss.
Other:
My income is completely separate to my partner, L. We take turns paying for groceries/meals out/trips and assume it evens out to 50/50. Right now, I earn a lot more than L, who is a medical resident and earns about $100,000, with no student debt, but we both live off about the same amount per year as I'm focused so heavily on investing.
Section Three: Expenses
Rent and utilities: $1,300/month for my half of a two bed, two bath in Fremont. I moved in with L, last month and we split the rent 50/50. Previously my rent was $2060/month for an open one bed in the Capitol Hill.
Extra costs for UK mortgage/management company fees: $500
Investment/savings: Until this month, I was investing $2,000- $2,500. Now that I’ve reached my investment target for the year (a combination of my bonus, savings and vested stock), I’m re-routing that to a savings fund in a HYSA for next Summer. I’m planning to relocate to the East Coast with L, and hoping to take the summer off between jobs.
Donations: $130/month to Black Lives Matter, Save the Children, an LGBT charity in England and a COVID relief fund. These are also matched by my employer 100%.
Cellphone: $30 in a shared plan with some friends
Wifi: $60 Subscriptions: Netflix $15, Amazon $14, AppleCare $12
Regular therapy: $160/month for two sessions with my UK therapist and $180/session roughly every 2-3 weeks with my tantra coach.
Living: I budget $3000 per month for living, therapy and tantra.
COVID-19: In current COVID times in Seattle, cases are being managed well by the city, we are in phase 2 and can meet up with 5 people per week who aren't in our household network and can go to restaurants with people in our household.
Tuesday:
7am - Bonus day! I start to think about what to do with some of the money in my fun fund. On my wishlist: Glittery Dr Martens 🥾, a vacuum that also steams floors, everything on the Olive website and lift tickets for 🎿 over winter.
8am - Work work work work work 🎶 Every day starts with calls with my team in India to review their product configuration progress. My role focuses around writing product pitches/demonstrations that sellers will deliver to customers. My days are spent talking to sellers about common customer requests, writing narratives to present the value of the products and designing screens to be built by my engineers/consultants.
9am - I spend $50 on an Amazon order for 🧼,🧴and English 🍫.
12pm - I accidentally start a small kitchen fire heating some heat pads in L’s dutch oven. The fire department was involved🔥😭
2pm - I have a call with a design lead about potential roles in their team. I'd love to expand my skillset into videos and 🙋🏼‍♀️
3pm - Our Imperfect Foods box arrives. This week we got eggs, veggies, fruits, goats cheese and gnocchi. $25, but I paid for this last week.
5pm - I go for an early dinner with L at Manolin to celebrate my bonus/destress after the fire🍴🍷 Restaurants are open in Seattle at 50% capacity and everyone wears masks. I pay. $150
8pm - Listen to records with L 🎶 and fall asleep at 9.30.
Total: $200
Wednesday:
8am - More calls, more feedback, more unblocking the engineers👩🏼‍💻
10am - I FaceTime catch up with my Dad ❤️ He just bought a house in the English countryside with his partner, L, and he gives me more excited updates about how renovations are going.
2pm - I get some excellent feedback about yesterday’s call, the manager wants me in his team 🙌🏻
6pm - Vegetarian taco night and cocktails with L ❤️🌮
8pm - I order a replacement pan after destroying L’s. $198
8.30pm - We start watching Normal People 📺
Total: $198
Thursday:
10am - My youngest brother schedules his first therapy appointment! 🙌🏻 I have three brothers and two are at high school or university and aren’t working. I believe we would all benefit from therapy, so this year I offered to pay for both of them. Now all four of us have been at some point ❤️ $59
12pm - Fire fighting at work, trying to fix products that keep breaking in time to deliver product demos to sellers next week 🔥💻
3pm - I do a trial recording with my colleague for a broadcast next week. 🎥🎞 The broadcast goes out to somewhere between 250,000-1,000,000 people. The broadcast is usually in a studio, but because of covid we’re shooting at home this time.
5pm - L comes home with a cuuuute new haircut 💁🏻‍♀️ and a new burner ring for our stove after it was damaged in the 🔥. L pays.
7pm - We make pizzas 🍕 and talk about what time togetheco existing/apart looks like for each of us. Moving in together is big and it helps to understand what makes each other feel good/not so good. The conversation is emotional and really helpful.
Total: $59
Friday:
8am - I have a morning of calls with India/England/US agreeing next steps/fire fighting 🔥
11am - I reflect on how writing a money diary is making me feel guilty about spending money, even if my “normal” spending fits into my budget and my “fun” spending comes from my bonus. One to talk about in therapy I think.
4pm - Another busy afternoon jumping between calls. A good rehearsal for the broadcast ✔️ good feedback on our demo content ✔️ next week planned out in Outlook ✔️
5pm - I meet with my tantra coach for a two hour session. I originally started going to see them to learn more about sex (🙌🏻) but have learned that tantra is much bigger than that, it’s an eastern tradition that is centered around connecting with your heart and body and being present. It’s had a massive impact on my ability to get out of my head. Today we focused on simple body exercises to get me more connected to my body. $200
7pm - L started a 30 hour shift this morning so I have a solo date night ❤️ bath-time + Quorn chicken nugget wraps (I love eating in the bath 😆) + TikTok ✌🏻
Total: $200
Saturday:
8am - I wake up and listen to Jameela Jamil and Katherine Ryan in the iWeigh podcast.
9am - I meditate 🧘🏼‍♀️. I started meditating 3-7 times per week six months ago using the Headspace app and it was a great intro. I’ve been resisting meditating for the past two weeks, and going to see my tantra coach has given me the umph to start again today. I do 20 minutes unguided.
10am - L comes home from work and we catch up before they sleep 💤 I spend the day in the bath, reading The Untethered Soul, eating fake sausage patties, eggs and sautéed tomatoes on toast, on reddit, watching Normal People and napping 🛀📚
6pm - I see my two best friends, N&V, a queer couple in Seattle ❤️ they know how to make me feel loved and buy all of my favorite foods for dinner ❤️ I uber there and back wearing a mask. $30
Total: $30
Sunday:
10am - I spend the morning eating eggs, veggies and fake chorizo, reading The Untethered Soul and The Simple Path to Wealth in the bath, and meditating.
1pm - I FaceTime my Dad and his partner, L ❤️
2pm - L and I spend the afternoon watching Ratchet, snoozing and walking to Gas Works park to get some fresh air.
6.30pm - We cook veggie bolognese with gnocchi and have some quality time after a crazy month of shifts for L.
10pm - L crashes and I order a Dyson vacuum with some of my bonus money #thisis29. $385
Total: $385
Monday:
7am - I wake up and meditate🧘🏼‍♀️
8am - Catch up calls with the India team. I have a fairly slow morning after that, agreeing deliverables for the week with our team.
12pm - I make sweet potato tacos for lunch using up ingredients in the fridge 🙌🏻🌮
4pm - I do a recording for the broadcast on Wednesday. Oh hey there hair, makeup and formal work clothes, where have you been hiding? 💄
5.30pm - L and I listen to a Lake Street Dive concert online on the porch 🎵
7.30pm - L buys groceries and we head for a socially distanced picnic outside.
Total: $0
Food + Drink: $160
Fun / Entertainment: $0
Home + Health: $644
Clothes + Beauty: $40
Transport: $30
Other: $198
Weekly Total: $1072
Lastly, reflect on your diary!
Writing this diary was good for me! It made me see some of the small, happy moments that happen each day.
All in all, apart from the vacuum that I bought with my bonus, this is average spending for me. I'm very conscious of not spending more than $700/week. This means if I have more expensive days, like days when I have to pay for therapy or tantra, I'll make sure I balance it out on other days.
I feel incredibly lucky that I have a high salary that gives me an incredibly good quality of life and enables me to save for the future. I have an "it's too good to be true" fear, so I'm focused on investing a lot right now to set myself up long term.

Section Four: The nitty gritty
Monday:
8:30AM: I wake up and make coffee out of my two year old coffee maker. I use trader joe’s light roast ground coffee. I finish the last of the oat milk. I need to pick up more milk/milk substitute.
9:00AM: Work. I can’t tell if I’m rested or not. I woke up in a panic around 3 AM two nights in a row. It’s probably my period hormones. I’m also wearing bikini bottoms as underwear.
11:30AM: Leftover chicken and couscous that I made last night. Fried some chilis in oil and added a runny egg on top.
5:00PM: Do I dare nip out and pick up some milk? I do it and bring my work phone. Almond breeze is on sale for $3.99.
6:00PM: I am technically not on a client today, so I sign off.
6:30PM: Dinner is frozen trader joe’s meatballs and asparagus and some noodles I found in my fridge. I really, really love trader joe’s. Their wine store should have a punch card. One free bottle every ten bottles purchased. I have a glass of sonoma valley chardonnay.
7:30PM: I drop to the mat and do 50 reps on each side of my favorite abs, legs/glutes and arms moves. Accouterments include resistance bands and free weights. Takes about 30 minutes.
8:30PM: Someone asks me out for Thursday. I text back yes. While we’re on this dating topic, have you noticed that Bumble removed their two free advanced filters? I cave and get the lifetime premium version. $149.99. I don’t think I’ll disclose what two filters I care about, but feel free to guess and judge. laughing crying emoji
Tuesday:
9:00AM: Cold snap last night, and my forgiving bed is oh so forgiving.
9:30AM: Coffee with almond milk and work. But first, I order tea tree oil from amazon with a gift card. $9.00 It’s my antiseptic of choice (diluted) when something isn’t severe enough for neosporin.
12:30PM Lunch is chicken and couscous again. Today I add parm to the whole mess.
3:00PM Stretch break. I drink water and eat strawberries. Is health and wellness my passion now?
5:00PM Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Time for BBQ salmon and asparagus. Also time for wine. I shoot a quick email even though it’s annoying to be emailing after 5pm.
7:30PM I half heartedly workout but I’m a little distracted. My friend got stood up by a first date today. I was skeptical about this prospective date, but I’m glad my friend didn’t waste any more time on this person. Better luck next time!
10:00PM Bedtime. Asparagus makes my pee smell weird.
Wednesday:
8:30AM: Up and at them. Coffee with almond milk in hand.
9:00AM: I moved up today’s first meeting so that I can…
9:30AM: ...also attend a second meeting for another team.
1:00PM: Third meeting of the day. I’m basically late because I got distracted making a flowchart of first date protocols. I guess my friend getting stood up yesterday really ticked me off. The flowchart walks you through everything from matching to walking into your first date venue. My neurosis has no bounds. The flowchart is shared in the group chat. I eat lunch.
2:00PM: I signed up for a professional organization talk on epidemiology. The registration fee is $25 but the firm will pay for it.
3:30PM: Trading desk calls me and I accidentally hang up the first time because I didn’t save their number. I call back and work ensues. I thank him for calling and he says it’s nice to talk on the phone now (wfh problems). I say that it’s better than mumbling to yourself which I do nowadays. We laugh.
4:00PM: A different friend refuses to cut things off with an awful ex. She has previously admitted she is terrified of being alone. I beg her to focus on studying for her certs. She’s a grown woman with a full time job and volunteering hours. She doesn’t work for Teaching A Grown Man How to Act, Incorporated. I offer to slap her for free, friends and family discount.
6:00PM: It is time to venture out and get some vegetables. I have one more serving of asparagus, but I just can’t. Can’t. Not tonight. I buy four small tomatoes on the vine, one large green bell pepper and one jumbo eggplant. $4.59
6:30PM: Dinner is the remaining trader joe’s turkey meatballs and roasted eggplant. I don’t know what liquid smoke is (lol a chemical) but it makes the smoked paprika smell SO good. Also a glass of wine. The chardonnay is now kicked.
9:00PM: Early bedtime.
Thursday:
9:00AM: And my friend (birthday girl) invites me to go to the Hamptons with her and three others this weekend. It is technically a kidnapping since they’re whisking the girl clowning over her ex out of the city so she physically cannot go see him. I have such intense FOMO I can feel my eye twitching. One of the few blessings of wfh. Birthday girl is doing remote law school with Cornell and Clown girl is taking a firm sabbatical to study. And I suppose I shall wither away in my apartment - Whiny girl. There are too many variables for me to be comfortable going (people and location wise), and I don’t want to be holding everyone back or bringing people down. A friendship that insists upon agreement on all things is not worth its name.
2:00PM: Eating leftover meatballs and eggplant. Got a surprise email that I’ve been awarded a monetary performance bonus. This could be in increments of a couple hundred dollars up to maybe a thousand. I’ve received 2 grand this year. (Not included in the salary above, but I utilize it as part of my salary since it’s a known fact my line of work is underpaid compared to industry.)
4:00PM: Date asks to reschedule for tomorrow. Apologizes profusely but I’m annoyed...maybe? To be completely honest, I’m too giddy over the surprise $600 to be anything but :p!
6:00PM: I heat up chicken shumai and have a tomato. I can’t explain my meals today.
7:00PM: Seltzer, strawberries and raw thai chilis. It’s a virgin cocktail! With a bite.
7:30PM: Workout time! I have my favorite videos for abs and lower body. Arms and shoulders are the bane of my existence, but that’s when I use the free weights and just count reps as I watch Netflix.
10:00PM: I fall asleep rewatching old episodes of Madam Secretary. Ah, to imagine a parallel universe...
Friday:
9:00AM: Today is payday. I check and see that my 401k max deduction has kicked in. Guess who now has a bi weekly take home of ~700? This girl. I’ll be close to my max contribution by 12/31. I don’t have many feelings about it, since math wise it’s just a rebalancing between my checking and retirement and a bit of tax deferral. However, This does mean that next I have to keep an eye on interest rates and get firm pre-approval for HYSAs that I’m interested in. Independence is paramount but sucky. Please leave your recommendations below! I’ll check to see if I’m able to open an account with them. Fingers crossed interest rates recover by next year.
12:30PM: Work is slow today. I heat up the rest of the chicken shumai and roast another batch of eggplant. Since I’m already there, I make another batch of chicken/tomato/couscous/parm. This will be dinner and probably lunch at some point.
*Fridge report: we now have one tomato and one green bell pepper left! I am very good with my protein, fat and fiber. But I struggle with adding carbs because I used to count macros in my “dua lipa is my religion” phase in school. Have you seen her arms? Her abs? Her voice? I made it to 130 lbs but it wasn’t sustainable since my natural state is around 120 lbs. I was eating peanut butter at midnight just to make my goals. And there were never enough carbs or sugar allotted for the day, so I became very stingy with them. Now I remind myself that at least one meal a day has to have some sort of rice, couscous, pasta, potato or farro base. Still not a fan of sugar. Dessert, in my opinion, is a wellness/mental health/social thing. Not really a part of my food pyramid since I get enough sugar from my fruit and vegetables. *
7:00PM: I walk to my date. It is so windy by the water that the menu is torn from the laminate and I watch as the next table’s burrata rolls off their plate. Date walks me home.
9:00PM: I group facetime with my college friends. We debrief on a weekly basis. The Seattle engineer sends us a link of a 25 year old Youtuber closing on a place in Palm Springs and how much she spent in a week. $400 on plants!? The one in med school invites us to come visit, although she warns that her rotations take up the bulk of her time. The civil engineer in LA brainstorms ways to get out of chit chatting with her housemates when she gets home. I do an OOTD of my old reformation dress that I wore that day.
Saturday:
9:00AM: I have a headache. Might have been the wind last night or the fact that I kept my bedroom window wide open. I read emails in bed. No work fires. I think about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. What an exceptional woman. There is no room for mediocre women in the world, but so much room for mediocre men.
12:00PM: I get up. Chug water, coffee and take Advil. The day will come when this post hangover checklist no longer works. I pick up large brown eggs on sale for $2.99, Eggos - two boxes on sale for $4 and two packs of ramen. Total: $11. I eat my eggos with butter and honey. I glance at the nutrient breakdown - it’s almost real food. I clean the apartment.
6:30PM: I call my parents. Mom rambles on about orchids and my dad asks whether or not you could get addicted to workout endorphins. I send my dad a couple of medical journals with contradicting opinions. That’ll keep him occupied for the night.
7:30PM: I put on a jacket and meet my date. I’m still wearing the same dress. Have you seen the Netflix show, Dating Around? There’s live music at the venue. The server shows us exactly how they want us to sit so we’re far enough from the other outdoor diners. It is cold. I ponder on how well the 25% indoor capacity will work come 9/30.
10:30PM: Bedtime.
Sunday:
10:00AM: I get up and respond to texts. I feel so lame compared to some of my friends. How are people awake at 2AM? It throws off the next day for me. I take my multivitamins and brush my teeth with my troll’s toothbrush. (Kid toothbrushes are smaller and they’re easier on my gums.) Am I both a child and grandmother in a singular flesh prison?
1PM: Scavenge my own leftovers. I will have to do another big food shop next week. I usually spend $100 every two weeks on groceries. It is strategic. Think staples of frozen chicken tenderloin, seafood, veggies and fruit. I usually have two types of liquor and either wine/hard seltzer on hand. My alcohol budget is $100/month.
2:30PM: I order shampoo from Amazon with my gift card. What shampoos do you like? I got the Ren Pure biotin and collagen one, a staple since school. No sodium chloride, sulfates or dyes. Very bland packaging, just the way I like it. (*$7 for 32oz.) I have stubborn hair. She wears me - I don’t style her.
6:00PM: I head to my date downtown. We walk the dog. Talk about pet insurance.
10:00PM: I mentally go through my work checklist for the upcoming week as I wind down. I sleep better when I can visualize what is ahead. Uncertainty is not exciting for me, although I dare say learning to manage uncertainty will be one of my major plot lines in this lifetime.
Week breakdown:
Food + Drink : $19.6
Fun / Entertainment : $150
Home + Health: $10(gift card)
Clothes + Beauty: $7.6 (gift card)
Transport: prepaid metro card $0
Other: My monthly home expenses were also charged this week. Please see above. ~$150
Initial thoughts:
I am so excited. It’s not every day I allow myself to fight with strangers on the internet. But now that I am the subject matter, takes earrings off
Final thoughts:
This was a standard week for me. I enjoy the pendulum metaphor, where you don’t try to pit priorities against each other or try to cover all bases all the time, but try to swing back and forth as needed. Some weeks are work heavy, some weeks are dedicated to family or friends, some weeks I’m helping with firm volunteer targets. It is a privilege to be able to swing back and forth without consequence. I also received confirmation from NY Division of Housing that my apartment is in fact rent stabilized. I also see the rent charged for tenants dating back to 1990. This is fascinating.
Breakdown:
Friendship time: 1.5 hr facetime. 1 hr phone call.
Dating time: Three evenings.
Family time: 2 phone calls.
Education time: 1 professional talk, half a book. The book had a sensitive subject matter that still lingers, albeit negatively, in my mind.
Career time: Standard. Positively recognized.
Social justice/Volunteer time: Lacking this week. I would like to donate something in memory of RBG, please recommend? Doesn’t have to be political, but female empowerment would be nice.
All in all, good hustle out there! Grab an orange slice, walk it off. Onto the next.

2020.09.22 14:04 LordChozo Hindsight is 2020: #9 - The Cinema Show

from Selling England by the Pound, 1973
Listen to it here!
“Have you ever heard of the Boat of Tiresias?” That was the question posed to the class by one of my college philosophy professors. Nobody raised their hands; though I had heard of Tiresias in another context, I wasn’t aware of any particular association with a boat. The professor went on to explain that the Boat presented a question of metaphysical identity. He posed the thought problem to us thusly:
Tiresias had a boat that was of such cultural/historical importance that it was preserved in Athens, but, as the boat was constructed of wood, it slowly began to rot away, one board at a time. And so, being good caretakers, those tasked with the boat’s preservation would remove the rotting piece of wood and replace it with a fresh wooden board of equal dimensions. Piece by piece the boat was restored and replaced in this manner until after many decades no wood from the original boat remained. Was this, then, the same boat as the one that entered their care? Or was it now a different boat entirely? And if it were a different boat entirely, at what point did the identity of the boat change? After one plank? After every plank? Somewhere in between?
This is deep, thought-provoking stuff. So the idea that Genesis wrote a song heavily featuring Tiresias? Must be pretty heady material indeed!
Peter: We seem to have lost the adolescent preoccupation with sex and death, and what we have now are certain kinds of unrelated lyrical ideas. 1
So one just looks at the lyrics and...wait a minute here. Romeo? Juliet? An extended metaphor about earth and sea as pertaining to erotic pleasure? ...This song’s about sex, isn’t it? Peter lied to me. Come on, man! Where are my metaphysics? Where’s this boat I’ve heard so much about? There must be some misunderstanding! There must be some kind of mistake!
Oh, what’s that? It’s the Boat of Theseus? My professor just had his classical Greek figures confused this whole time? Well, that’s just great. All right then...I suppose sex it is!
Steve: It’s a very beautiful song, very romantic… 2
OK. Let’s talk about this romantic song, shall we? It’s a lovely little opening here with the tinkling 12-string sound. It gives similar vibes to “The Musical Box” a couple albums earlier, though the notes and structures are very different. But it almost wasn’t to be.
Steve: When it was originally put together it was linked to “Dancing with the Moonlit Knight”. We had a very sort of contentious meeting about this at the time. I remember Phil saying, “Well, if there’s a 12-string passage in something, does it mean that every long song has to have a 12-string passage in it?” There were some crestfallen faces. So we started to do some long songs that didn’t have 12-string passages in them. 2
You can almost see Mike’s face getting even longer than usual at an exasperated Phil saying “Enough with the 12-strings already!” And indeed, while the 12-string wouldn’t exactly go away until the three-piece era, after this album it did become slightly less ubiquitous. But by golly, “The Cinema Show” is a romantic song, and romance means 12-string guitar!
Mike: Another good example of when I tuned my 12-strings. Normally you’ve got twelve strings and they’re paired up, and you tune each pair to the same note. I started tuning each pair to harmony notes. Which is how the song starts with that little rundown. Now what the hell that tuning is, I haven’t got a clue. Because the other day in New York they were saying, “Let’s do the first half of ‘Cinema Show’ maybe.” And I said, “Well, I have no idea how I played it. We’d have to work a compromised version out.” 3
Spoiler alert: they never did work a compromised tuning out, so if you’re disappointed that you never got to hear “The Cinema Show” in its entirety in the 21st century, it’s all Mike’s fault. Anyway, there are a lot of guitar strings tinkling around in this one.
Steve: I was influenced by the flute work of Ian McDonald working with King Crimson, so I tried to play very pastoral phrases. I developed it a bit more when we did it live, doing percussion noises and whathaveyou. But in some ways it typifies the Genesis sound because you’ve got almost a plethora of 12-strings going: sometimes two 12-strings, sometimes three. And an electric 6-string as well. And this jangly sound where you can’t tell: it sounds almost...is that a keyboard? Is that a guitar? What is that sound? 3
And then we get the story, or really more like a snapshot, of this busy young woman trying to tidy up her place and herself before going to catch a movie with her date. I confess when I first heard the lyric that she “clears her morning meal” I thought it meant she was having some gastrointestinal difficulties, if you catch my drift. Decidedly unromantic, that. But I wouldn’t have put something like that past Peter. Was it Peter? Who did the lyrics to this one, anyway?
Phil: ”Cinema Show” was lyrically I think Tony and Peter. I think. Either Tony and Peter or Mike and Peter. 3
Was it you or was it me? Ah well. In any case, from Juliet we go straight to Romeo, who is basically just looking to get laid. It’s a classic story. Boy meets girl, boy lusts after girl, girl agrees to a pleasant night at the cinema, boy gives girl chocolates, girl thinks boy is nice, boy propositions girl, both go home a little more tired. Tale as old as time, that one. And it’s from there that Tiresias makes his appearance, where his actual background is relayed. There are variations on the classical myth, but Genesis lands on one of them in particular.
Tiresias, as the story goes, was hiking up a mountain and saw a pair of snakes “getting nasty,” as I think they called it back then. He used his walking stick to “break that s--- up,” I think was the parlance, which incurred the wrath of the goddess queen Hera, who was aspected to things like fertility. Hera was a capricious and impulsive goddess, and so she immediately decided that interrupting a pair of fornicating snakes was punishable by forced sex change. Thus, she transformed Tiresias into a woman and made Tiresias one of her priestesses so (s)he could atone. Tiresias was surprisingly not much put out by this turn of events, and found a nice man to settle down and have kids with. After some years, Mother Tiresias found some more snakes doin’ the deed, and left them alone. Hera then turned Tiresias back into a man since he’d seemed to learn his lesson, which meant that in a very strange twist of fate, his kids now had two biological dads; I imagine the family dynamics probably got a little awkward after that.
Later, Hera and her husband Zeus found themselves in an argument over who derived more pleasure from sex - men or women. Being exceedingly petty gods with victim complexes, each one wanted the other sex to be the “winner.” That is, Hera argued that men enjoyed sex more, and Zeus the opposite. At an impasse, Hera summoned Tiresias on the basis that he was the only person - mortal or god - who had experienced sex from both sides of the equation. They posed the question to him, and though he was a priest(ess?) of Hera, he felt compelled to answer truthfully: women get way more out of it than men do. Genesis translate this reply thusly: “Once a man, like the sea I raged. Once a woman, like the earth I gave. But there is, in fact, more earth than sea.” A furious Hera struck him blind on the spot for embarrassing her, but a very pleased Zeus tried to make up for it by giving him foresight instead. Thus, Tiresias became known as a blind seer, a title as fittingly oxymoronic as his status as the first man-woman-man.
So, in summary, “The Cinema Show” isn’t an adolescent fixation on sex. No, it’s an adolescent fixation on sex combined with classical Greek mythology. See? All grown up now! In fairness though, musically that maturation is very clear. After our first dalliance with Tiresias, we go into a veritable forest of guitar strings once again, featuring oboe and flute solos. I’ve only ever heard one other song that sounds anything like it, and that’s “The Dreaming Tree” by Dave Matthews Band, which came out 24 years later and may well have been influenced significantly by this song in the first place. It’s such a unique atmosphere. As much as I love the live versions of this song, listening to this section on Seconds Out you can’t help but feel like an entire audio channel is missing. Those jazzy, improv style woodwind lines have an impact that to me can’t be overstated.
Then we get some really delightful vocal interplay on simple “la la la” stuff before one last little trip back with Father Tiresias, and one last declaration that there’s more earth than sea as Steve’s electric guitar gets a little solo to bring us home. Or is that a keyboard? Dangit guys, you’ve got me all confused again.
Let’s hear it from the band!
Steve: It’s a very beautiful combination I think of 12-strings and keyboards. 2
Tony: The other song on this album I suppose that kind of was a big development for us again was “The Cinema Show”. Which was another one of those things which starts off with a sort of quiet, acoustic beginning and then ends up doing something else at the end. 3
Mike: Bloody hard to write [the album]... The funny thing was we thought we had the bulk of it written. “Cinema Show” was put on at the end, and that became one of the best things - one example that you shouldn’t force writing. 4
Phil: I’d like Genesis to get a bit looser, while keeping the arranged things. I want to get more into different time signatures. I think my playing has improved a lot… 5
Tony: Mike had this riff which was in seven, just going dun dun dun g-jun-dun, like that. And he was playing along and you know, then I just sort of started fiddling around on top of it. 3
Phil: A guitar riff [and] a 7/8 drum riff. And then Tony just had sort of lots of bits on top, and eventually that became “the thing.” Which was very strong, I think. 3
Mike: The rhythm was 7/8, which feels different but doesn’t sound clever-clever. 6
Huh, that’s weird. I’ve listened to this thing a number of times and I don’t hear anything in seven. Wonder what they’re talking ab-
dun dun dun d-d-dun dun dun
...Did you guys hear that? That was pretty we-

dun dun dun d-d-dun dun dun d-d-dun dun dun d-d-dun dun dun d-d-dun dun dun
Whoooooa there. This is something else entirely here. What is going on?
Tony: “The Cinema Show”, again like “The Musical Box” or “Supper’s Ready”, had started off with an acoustic idea. But this time once we went off into the instrumental section at the end we didn’t come back; it developed its own life. When we played that song to Tony Stratton-Smith, who was obviously a big fan of ours, he didn’t like it. He felt we were trying to move into the area of ELP and that we were drifting away from what we did best. My feeling was that you can’t stay doing the same thing forever and that particularly with “Firth of Fifth” and “The Cinema Show” we were trying out things we hadn’t done on the previous albums. 7
Man, Tony’s doing some work on this. What even…
Mike: Selling England wasn’t my favorite album but “The Cinema Show” was a real standout moment. The second half of the song was the start of a new phase between me and Tony… I’m moving around chords, Tony’s reacting and improvising over them, and between the two of us we’re coming up with something that would go on to be the essence of the Genesis sound for the next twenty years. And the drumming’s great, too. 6
Gracious, the drumming! How did I miss that? Just listen to that cymbal work! That’s incredible! How the…
Tony: And then we thought this could be really good, so again Phil, Mike, and I just went off really, and put this all together and worked on all of those bits. And I just improvised for hours and got these little bits and pieces going, and Mike would change the chords, and we ended up with this piece. And you know, it was such a strong rhythm in the first place. A lot of things you play on it could be really good. But I got one or two quite good melodies on top of it… 3
I guess you mean this wonderful melody here? This splendid little dance around the A-major scale? What a delight!
Steve: The famous melody. Of course in a way it always deserved to be heard live to get the full impact of this. Last time I did it with my band, it virtually raised the roof. I’d never heard anything so loud in my life. The bass pedals were enough to bring the ceiling down. And those famous Mellotron voices of course. ...I think the cinematic effect, the soundtrack effect, really comes from the instrumental stuff and Tony’s extraordinary keyboard work on this. 2
Raise the roof? Bass pedals? What are you talking about St-

OH MY WORD

Tony: The solo on “Cinema Show” was very much the thing… Obviously, “Cinema Show” went on to become a live classic. 8
WHAT WAS THAT SOUND? AND WHERE DID MY BODY GO?
Steve: We’d just acquired the Mellotron voices. I pushed the band into getting a Mellotron way back in the day, and of course we bought our original one off of King Crimson. But the Mellotron voices hadn’t really been invented at that point. I remember Mellotronics said to us, “Ooh, there’s some very interesting stuff. You might like to come down and hear.” And Tony Banks and I went down to listen to their latest stuff and it was male and female voices mixed, and you could get them separately if you wanted. So, you know, we opted to have the full whack of them all together. 2
Male and female mashed together, huh? Clever-clever, Steve! I see what you did there!
Mike: But the second part, once again it seems to me we’d started this movement I think with myself, Phil, and Tony… playing, jamming, getting instrumental moments like the...9/8 in “Supper’s Ready”, this one [in “Cinema Show”]...which became a large part of our trademark, really. The instrumental part was a huge sort of crowd pleaser. Very “live” song. 3
“Crowd pleaser…” ya think? Man, gonna take a bit to come down from that...wait, why isn’t it coming down? WHY ISN’T IT COMING DOWN? Good gravy Tony, aren’t your fingers tired yet?! HOW IS THIS STILL HAPPENING?
Peter: The solos are longer on this one and we’ve played our things to their natural length. In the past we rather nervously tended to cut things short. The new [album] has longer solos - at the risk of being boring. We hope the fans will stay with us at any rate. 9
STILL HERE, PETE OL’ CHAP!
Mike: When we played the song live, Pete and Steve would leave the stage at the end so it was just me, Tony, and Phil. It was so strong and it was just the three of us. Although I wasn’t conscious of it at the time, I think that must have been something I stored away in my memory: the knowledge of what the three of us could do. 6
Oh, poor Steve. Must’ve been a little dull for him there. I feel really bad for the guy.
Steve: For me the most creative album the band did is Selling England by the Pound. I think that showcased both the song aspect that the band had, I think it showcased some of the playing talent...like, you know, occasionally the instruments were allowed to breathe. I mean, you know, unaccompanied things. Not very long, but, you know, occasionally. I think the odd solo was too long. I think “Cinema Show”, I mean that keyboard solo which went on interminably on one chord in 7/8 for God knows how long. I think that was pretty damn long. Apart from that I think it showcased the individual abilities pretty nicely. 10
...Aight, forget him. Let’s gooooooo! I can only imagine hearing this thing live. Eh? You’ve got a link? Yusssssssssssssss!
Tony: Although Chester [Thompson] came from a slightly different area of music, he was very able to adapt to what we were doing, and he added to our very English kind of music a hint of something which I really liked. A song like “The Cinema Show” really developed and came alive with the double drumming between Chester and Phil - which we had first tried out with Bill Bruford. 10
Double drummin’, gimme gimme! I can’t get enough of this thing man. This song is pure fire in keyboard form. Unimpeachable. Magnificent.
Phil: “Cinema Show” is a huge tour-de-force. [The album’s] certainly got a lot of things we still play. Huge stage classics on it. I like “Cinema Show” in particular. The first half is great as well. 3
Wait, what first half?
Let’s hear it from the band!
Tony: I think the instrumental at the end of this was probably the best of the ones we did - at this stage of our careers, anyhow. ...and it again built up to a very nice sort of climax I think. Probably better on stage than it was on the album in many ways, because on the album it sort of fades out into the next bit, which I’m not too sure is quite so good. But it was an exciting thing to have created at the time. We were very pleased with it. 3
Tony: The things I get bored with [playing], I cut out [live]. Like lots of parts of “Cinema Show” I couldn’t stand playing anymore. So we only do the three best parts of it. 11
Tony: There is a tendency to avoid rhythms like seven [in later Genesis music], because at this point in time they sound a little bit dated. Like the seven we used in “Cinema Show”. You can go into the studio, tap out a rhythm in seven, and almost say it’s “Cinema Show” because it’s so identifiable. 11

2020.09.22 09:42 SweetyFresh Out of State UC Claims = Fraud?

A surge in suspicious new claims filed late last week will stall payments to first-time applicants to a federal unemployment program for gig workers and independent contractors.
The unexplained increase in claims for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) is believed to be part of an ongoing fraud scheme, Pennsylvania Labor and Industry Secretary Jerry Oleksiak said during a media update Monday.
The payout delay will not impact Pennsylvanians who are receiving payments through the other unemployment program programs. PUA beneficiaries with prior approved open claims also are not impacted.
On Thursday and Friday the number of new PUA claims filed in the state jumped to more than 20,000, four times higher than the average number of weekly new claims filed since the coronavirus pandemic began in the state.
Most of the new claims were from out-of-state, one of the hallmarks of the PUA fraud, which prompted officials to flag them for further investigation, Oleksiak said.
The department has met with its third-party vendor and authorities to develop stronger anti-fraud and identification verification methods, but there is no timeline for how long it will delay new claim payments, Oleksiak said.
“We will do it as quickly and effectively as possible,” he added. "We know the PUA program is a lifeline for many families, and we want these Pennsylvanians to be able to access support as quickly as possible during this time of hardship.”
More Coverage::Unemployment in Pennsylvania: State approved for $2.8B loan for trust fund
Individuals who applied for PUA benefits for the first time on Thursday and Friday are affected by the delay, but officials have not ruled out double checking claims filed earlier in the week.
Unemployment officials suspect that criminals targeted the PUA program because it lacks safeguards that are in place for the state’s regular unemployment program.
PUA is the federally funded program created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that pays unemployment benefits to individuals who otherwise don’t qualify for state benefits because they are self-employed.
Claimants self-certify that they are unemployed as a result of the ongoing coronavirus, but they do not go through the same checks to prove they are qualified as claimants in the traditional unemployment program, Oleksiak said.
The biggest difference in the federal and the state-run unemployment programs involves the back-dating of claims, which was done to speed up delivery of benefits, said Susan Dickinson, director of the Office of Unemployment Benefits Policy.
The federal government ordered states to backdate everyone to the last day they worked without first verifying the information, which increased the potential for fraud, Dickinson said.
Pennsylvania is among other states where scammers began filing PUA claims under stolen identities using personal information taken through previous data breaches that occurred outside of state government. The scam started shortly after the PUA program opened.
Pennsylvania and other states implemented security measures to help identify and prevent payout for fraudulent claims including shutting down the automatic backdating in the PUA system.
The security measures reduced the overall number of PUA claims filed, until last week, Oleksiak said.
Federal and state authorities last month charged 33 people, including eight inmates in Pennsylvania prisons and Allegheny County jail with COVID-19 benefit fraud.
Pennsylvania officials recently found the names of an additional 10,000 state prison inmates on Pennsylvania’s unemployment rolls, though it’s unclear whether those people were aware that jobless claims had been filed on their behalf. The fraud was uncovered by U.S. postal inspectors, who noticed a large volume of mail arriving at homes that are abandoned or being sold.
California authorities announced they have arrested 44 people in Beverly Hills so far this month who were allegedly attempting to intercept fraudulently obtained debit cards obtained by using stolen identities. Many of those arrested were from out-of-state.
Also Monday, Oleksiak said Pennsylvania has already paid $1.5 billion of the $2.8 billion it received in federal Lost Wage Assistance program. The federal government is expected soon to announced an end-date for claims to be filed.
The program funded with disaster relief money through the Federal Emergency Management Agency provided $300 a week additional in unemployment compensation to eligible beneficiaries.
The temporary program closed on Sept. 5, but beneficiaries may still be eligible for a lump sum payment of up to six weeks or $1,800.
Not all unemployed Pennsylvanians who qualify for an extra $300 a week through a recently ended federal program will get the money, the state’s Labor and Industry Secretary said on Monday.
It’s the reason why Secretary Jerry Oleksiak reiterated that individuals who may be eligible should apply and re-certify their status as soon as possible during a weekly press call Monday.
The department made close to $1.5 million in additional payments in the first round that was distributed on Monday. One claimant can collect up to $1,800 in additional payments.
Pennsylvania was approved for $2.8 billion through the federal Lost Wages Assistance program, which is expected to cover up to six weeks of retroactive extra cash payments, said Susan Dickinson, director of the Office of Unemployment Compensation Benefits Policy.
But once that money is gone there won't be any extra payments.

Have you ever heard about the origin of hockey? A sport played on hard ground is soccer, basketball, or baseball. For hockey players, pace and stamina need to be paired with being able to play on a broad ice shelf. So what is hockey specific?
Nội dung

What is hockey?

What is Hockey? To us, most of the definitions are relatively new. It’s a sports team content, two teams have been organized to compete. The two teams attempt to enter the opponent’s net with a hockey stick by a puck or a round platter.
📷
When the ball reaches the loss of the opponent, proportionate points are earned. When the ball enters, the opponent’s net will get comparable points.

Hockey on the grass

What is Hockey on the grass? It’s got an English hockey tag. For both men and women, hockey is a universal sport. But this sport typically includes more guys.
Field-hockey matches may be played on the surface of natural or artificial turf or sandy or gravel-covered pitches. Teams use relatively small 73 mm hockey sticks.
📷
This sport typically breaks up into two teams that play the same game of boys and girls or competing girls and women. In the areas of Europe, Asia, and South Africa, hockey is prevalent.

Ice Hockey

Athletes who play ice hockey will practically be tougher than grass hockey. The competitors contesting the two teams’ contents must wear a pair of ice skates to play on the ice. Athletes must put a rubber ball in the net of the opponent with a diameter of 76.2 mm.
Athletes have other abilities, such as expertise on big ice, and strength and stamina, to play well in this material and be able to manage the game themselves.

What is Ice Hockey?

Ice hockey is a variation of hockey. It has a play similar to that of ice hockey. This game will be divided into two pairs to compete directly against each other. Members of the team of 4 players use roller skates to play, and a goalkeeper is tasked to guard the ball from the net.
The game takes place in three main rounds, with each match lasting only 15 minutes. At the end of the three innings, the team with the most goals scored on the other side will be the winner.

History of Hockey

Most games are played with curved sticks, and in many cultures, a ball can be found. Records are from 4,000 years ago of people who are interested in a hockey game.
Legend has it that Man Man Man was a sporting game for himself, he tried to find a sporting match for himself. It collected a stick and placed it on the grass from hockey’s birth to carry a ball-like object.
In Canada and the North of the United States, a style of ice hockey took place on frozen lakes with harsh surfaces and before the invention of skates. Specific forms of rivalry started to emerge in the nineteenth century.

When the material of the supply-demand segment emerged, organizations came into being to carry out market laws and regulations.
Among professional athletes, hockey players seem to be the most beautiful. The players ran the winning spirit and saw how courageous they were playing on such a shaky ice base. Their presence looks like a giant ice teddy.
Hockey players make the sport the most appealing game both on and off the ice. If you haven’t believed it before, do you now have a reply to what the hockey idea was? It’s the world’s biggest sport.

The five greatest hockey players of all time

Wayne Gretzky

📷
The only player in the history of the NHL who won 200 points over the season is Wayne Gretzky, which Gretzky has made four achievements in his career. This is a very significant achievement. He has the best score record in 39 matches with 50 goals.
Thanks to his tenure with the Los Angeles Kings, Gretzky has shared his love for hockey in California. He eventually made the Golden State one of America’s fastest-growing hockey sites.

Bobby Orr

📷
Just ten seasons after playing at the NHL, Orr exploits his time by improving a defender’s skills and abilities. Although Doug Harvey is the pioneer in developing the game style to help defenders shine, the concept is brought up to new heights by Orr.
With his fast and safe movements, Orr can slip around the squad, even during the game. He moves around the field. He is the defender norm with records and ample support for an attack.
Orr ‘s impact goes more profound than the ice rink as he leads players to condemn Alan Eagleson’s dishonesty.

Mario Lemieux

📷
In his final season for Laval Voisins, Mario Lemieux scored 282 points in 70 games. In the 1988–1989 season, he had achieved the 200-point mark with 85 goals and 114 aides. Owing to health reasons, his career was interrupted for three years.
One of the best players on the ice will still be remembered for Lemieux. Besides, its reputation has been recognized and appreciated by the Mario Lemieux Society, the foundation that supports cancer research.

Gordie Howe

📷
Howe’s the player in NHL history who scored over 800 goals. “Mr. Hockey ‘s record was also remarkable in the 1980s and when defensemen were allowed to protect themselves against offensive players.
Howe also dominates his time with six MVP titles over a decade. He spent 32 years at the NHL and the World Hockey Association from the end of World War II until the middle of the colder period.

Jaromir Jagr

📷
He has five goals, three titles Lester Pearson (now Ted Lindsay), and one title Hart. He has been given all of a hockey player’s awards. Jaromir Jagr will easily record more than 800 goals in his career with high power, physical strength, and experience if he doesn’t have to play for three years.
At the age of 43, he is still an involved player, and the NHL teams love him most.

Ice hockey: Very elaborate sport

Football will hold a place similar to the ‘King’s sport in the Summer Olympics in the winter Olympics.

Long-term root

There are a variety of hypotheses regarding the origin of hockey, but to date, most agree the sport is still the product of a game called “keritizein” in Ancient Greece. Hockey slowly developed by the British from the end of the eighteenth hundred until it became a single game in its present form.
📷
A match of Hockey on grass
The regular game field must meet the basic specifications of 60.98×30 m, according to the regulations created by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The rules are straightforward, with the ball entering the opponent’s net for each team of 6 players using skateboards (made of wood, aluminum, or synthetic resin).
The match lasts 60 minutes and is split into three recesses. The team which brings the ball into the net of the adversary will win. The main difference is that there is no time limit and the number of alternatives per game. The half-time break lasts about 15 minutes, about 30 and 17 minutes.

Summer Olympics first run

The first appearance in Belgium of Ice Hockey at the Olympic Summer 1920. From the 2004 Winter Olympics, the study was fully moved into the winter sports program and failed in 2014 before the last Olympic Games were held in Sotchi, Russia.
The major ice-hockey forces in the Olympic arena are considered by seven nations, including Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, and the USA.
📷
USA Women Hockey team in Olympic
Just 6/64 medals in the men’s composition do not belong to one of the above seven nations. In the women’s games, Olympic and World Championship competitions are still the battle of the “giants” party, and the Canadian and American teams are still in contention for the gold medal.
📷
Ice hockey is thriving today in size and width. It is always cold enough to shape a seasonal ice sheet of total hardness in geographically located regions, for instance, Canada, Finland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The area is situated in the United States’ northern latitude.
Officially, certain countries such as Canada and other countries of Europe select ice hockey as their winter national sport. The American Professional League (NHL) and the Women’s Federation in Canada (CWHL) will compete in elite North American tournaments.
Tens of thousands of people, hundreds of thousands of followers, are becoming increasingly popular via TV and as omnibus as football.

Conclusion: Hockey – Delicate, not sexy, but sexy

More than 50 percent of hockey players hold the same view that skills compensate for success. The player needs to have excellent balance when riding on a particular shoe (a lot like roller skates, but not wheels on the shoe bottom, but with a metal slice).
To gain motion skills, players must endure a long cycle from watching to training with a firm determination regularly.
📷
Hockey training room
Hockey seen from outside is not a sport which leaves a lovely picture. A players community is playing for a small disk, but often the chaotic collisions on the field cause the audience to feel irritated.
This is not to suggest that many people fear the intense direct opposition. However, these “negative” remarks are reversed instantly while in the place of “insider.”

Source.

September 22, 2020 Ames City Council Topics
Hi ames,
The Ames City Council meets on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom. The regular City Council meeting. The agenda includes:
  • 13. Resolution approving preliminary plans and specifications for District Geothermal Vertical Closed Loop at Baker Subdivision, setting October 14, 2020, as bid due date and October 27, 2020, as date of public hearing. Acting as the developer of this subdivision, the City is soliciting bids for a geothermal well field and distribution piping. As stated in the description, "With the utility-provided well field and distribution system proposed with this project, homeowners can connect to the system with no greater up-front costs than traditional heating and cooling systems. The operating costs are also similar, at today’s natural gas prices. (The cost comparison would favor geothermal with the projected increase in natural gas prices and changes to regional climate.) Greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be 10-14% lower than traditional HVAC systems and water heaters."
  • 19. Presentation of Draft Airport Master Plan. The City is aiming to adopt a new Airport Master Plan on October 27; during the current meeting, the draft plan will be presented for the first time. I'll certainly be relying on the City, the Technical Advisory Team, and the public for substantial guidance on this. So do send comments if you have them. By the way, this item is 397 pages long. Enjoy!

  • 20. Staff Report regarding East University Urban Revitalization Area. Should the City continue to provide tax incentives for Greek system house demolitions and reconstructions, or just for reconstructions that preserve 70% of the building exterior? Or should the City discontinue the incentive program for new applicants altogether? The City has already reached out to the existing houses for input and Council is now being asked to make a decision. Note that the options suggested by staff all ensure that properties that are partway through an incentivized project would be granted a reasonable amount of time to complete their construction plans before the system might change on them. Also, properties that are currently within a multi-year abatement program for completed projects would be able to continue the abatement schedules that were previously approved.

Non-Agenda Packet: The following items are requests and communications to the council that are not on the agenda for full discussion. This includes staff reports and communications or requests from constituents and developers. Typically the council will ask city staff for more information (a memo), put the item on a future agenda for deliberation and possible action, or just accept the communication, taking no further action. Council generally processes these requests and communications during the agenda portion called "Disposition of Communications to Council."
  • Possible Neighborhood Park. At Council's request, staff evaluated the property at 400 S. 4th St. as a possible neighborhood park, but does not recommend pursuing it.
  • Story County AUFP Amendment. The Ames Urban Fringe Plan is a land use and growth management plan for the two-mile band outside the Ames city limits. This letter from the Story County Board of Supervisors expresses interest in amendments to the successor to the AUFP agreement that is set to expire in July 2022.
Save the date: the City Council will hold a special meeting to discuss law enforcement policies on Tuesday, September 29, at 6pm. Focus areas or themes identified in the report to be released on September 25 include organizational culture, police officer recruitment and selection, police officer training, department policies, City ordinances and State law, transparency of records, accountability in complaint handling and discipline, communication, and funding. I will include a link to the report and more information in my next preview newsletter. Until then, see this link for more information.
TO REACH THE MAYOR AND ENTIRE CITY COUNCIL: Send email to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), (Note that emails to elected officials are generally subject to Iowa Open Records requests)
Thanks for reading! David Martin / Ames City Council, Ward 3
P.S. The continued uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic makes mail-in voting in the November general election a compelling option. If you live in Story County and would like to vote by mail, you can fill out and mail in a postage paid mail in ballot request form. If you live outside of Story County, look for the correct information via the Iowa Secretary of State's absentee ballot site.
And if you're not registered to vote -- the November election will be here before you know it! You can register to vote or update your voter registration online using your Iowa a driver’s license or ID number at Iowa Secretary of State website. 2020.09.21 18:41 IdentityCr1sis Cold-Hearted Killer - Making PCs Identify the Murderer

One of the common suggestions on here for starting the adventure is padding out the "Cold-Hearted Killer" starting quest. Instead of having an NPC identify the murderer and the motive, the PCs should have to figure it out themselves. I figure it'd be really useful to compile folks' clues and plans in one spot!
I've broken down the parts into various facts the PCs need to learn to tie the murders to Sephek (or at least to Torrga's Caravan). While the mystery is pretty easy to unravel if pushed the right way, I want everything to have multiple points of failure/adhere to the "Three Clue Rule" the Alexandrian wrote about (https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/1118/roleplaying-games/three-clue-rule). Anyone else have suggestions?
Fact 1 that the PCs need to figure out: these are towns that sacrifice people to the frostmaiden
Fact 2: All murders occurred not long after the new moon (not necessary but makes it easier for PCs to pick up on the connection between the murders and sacrifices)
Fact 3: Each victim avoided the lottery. Several NPCs in each of the 3 towns should be able to tell the PCs that the victims either weren’t concerned about the lottery or flat-out stated that they were going to be safe. Aim to have at least one unsubtle statement for each (just use enough for your PCs to catch on). Examples:
Fact 4: Torg's merchant company travels between towns & therefore its employees had access to each victim
Fact 5: Sephek Kaltro has a strange affinity for cold. You can introduce this before Sephek actually shows up by throwing it in when discussing Torrga's Merchant Company
Fact 6: Sephek claims that he has the gift of the frostmaiden because he was born on midwinter. However, this is not true.

2020.09.21 18:04 fuzz11 A Comprehensive Guide to Trading Credit Spreads-- A follow-up to my original theta gains post

I was hesitant to post this here at first because my gains post I submitted received some criticism about whether or not my approach to spreads was a true "theta gang" strategy. That point is probably still a little bit contentious but I get a lot of questions about my strategy from readers in this sub so I figured I would post it here. I will offer the disclaimer that this is a little risker of an approach to spreads due to my timeframe, but I think the advice it offers (regardless of timeframe) is helpful. I will also add that this is only 50% of the complete strategy I run, so I'll try to throw together another in-depth post about the other half of my strategy if it gets enough interest.
So I first dipped my toes into options trading a few years ago. I had previously been swing trading stocks so I had a couple years of experience before that, but the leverage and potential returns that options provided really piqued my interest. After it was all said and done, I lost almost $20,000 buying options. After realizing that someone was getting all of this money I was losing, I learned about option selling and haven’t looked back since.
I recently posted my YTD performance here, and received a lot of questions about how I did it. My strategy changed over time, but I first started with credit spreads, which may be applicable to more people since it’s a strategy that works with smaller accounts too. I got a lot of questions about how I played credit spreads and it’s tough to completely explain what I do through a comment here and a comment there so I created this guide explaining my exact approach to trading credit spreads. Here you go:
This is a wall of text, so if you're a more visual learner, here's a link to videos explaining all four parts:
Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Part Four

Part One: The Basics

So what is a spread? A high level conceptual explanation is that you’re essentially betting on a stock to finish above or below a certain price upon expiration. One of the advantages here is that you can set this number out of the money, so if a stock is trading at $100, you can bet that it’ll remain below $110 by a certain date. This is a bearish position, so if you’re correct and it goes down, you’ll make max profit. The catch though is that even if you’re wrong, you basically have a 10% upward cushion before you start to lose any money. So the easiest way to describe it is a strategy that lets you make money if you’re right, but also make money if you’re slightly off.
How does it work? So in the above example, if we were bearish on a stock we would open what’s called a call credit spread. We could set it up where we sell a 110c for a credit of $1.50, and buy a 115c for a debit of $0.50. This means that in this transaction we receive $1.50, and pay $0.50 for a net credit of $1. That credit is your max profit on the play. If you’re familiar with options you’ll know that if the stock finishes at or below $110 upon expiration, both of these calls will be worthless. That’s great news for us because the long leg we bought (115c) for 0.50 will be a loss, but we’ll get to keep the full $1.50 from the short leg (110c) that we sold, resulting in us realizing our max gain on the trade of $1.
Why not just sell the 110c and collect the full $1.50? While it cuts into our profits, the reason we buy the 115c in this example for $0.50 isn’t to cut into our profits when we’re correct, but rather protect us when we’re wrong. If the stock in the example stays below $110, we’re good to go and we’ll hit max profit. But what if it goes to $120, $150, or something crazy happens and it hits $200. If the stock hits $150 upon expiration, that 110c that we sold for $1.50 will be worth $40, meaning that we’ll incur a $3,875 loss in pursuit of a $150 gain. We’ve seen crazy run ups from the likes of TSLA and ZM lately, and people who sold what we call “naked options” got absolutely killed. With our spread, yes our 110c will be worth $40 meaning we’re down $4,000 on that position, but the 115c we bought behind it will be worth $35 meaning we’re up $3,500 there for a net loss of $500. Additionally, we get to keep that $1.00 credit we received up front no matter what, so our loss with this spread is actually $500-$100=$400 as opposed to the $3,875 loss that we would’ve seen had we sold the 110c by itself. THAT is the value in selling a spread as opposed to a naked option.
Why are you multiplying everything by 100? Each options contract is worth 100 shares, so a contract that is trading for $1.50 actually costs $150 to purchase.
Another high level point I like to make is that there are really 5 different things that can happen when you make a play. Let’s say you think a stock will go up. It can (1) go up a ton and you’d be correct, (2) go up a little and you’d be correct, (3) trade flat and you’d be incorrect, (4), go down a little and you’d be incorrect, or (5) go down a lot and you’d be incorrect. With a bullish spread, you’d hit max profit on 4/5 , or 80% of the possible outcomes, whereas if you bought stock or purchased an option you’d only be profitable on (1) or (2). Obviously the actual outcomes are a little more complex, but for a base-level understanding of the advantages a spread provides, I think this is a good way to look at it.
So that’s the value of a spread. A lot of traders are introduced to option selling and are scared of the prospect of incurring a huge loss like we mentioned above, but using credit spreads is a great way of receiving the benefits that selling has to offer while limiting a lot of the risks. So let’s move onto actually opening a spread.

Part Two: Making the Trade

So for actually opening a spread up, we have a four-step approach we take: Pick a Stock Pick a Direction Pick a Strike Price Execute the Trade
1: Picking a Stock:
One of the most important things I tell people is to trade what you know. I have a watchlist of 25-30 stocks that I watch and get familiar with during the day. That way if I recognize a good opportunity, I’ll have a decent base of knowledge to rely on to make what I feel is a smart play. It’s super easy to get caught up in the “stock of the week” and try to jump in on a play because a ticker is in the news. If you’re not familiar with a stock, don’t trade it.
For this example (the one used in the video), Wayfair was trading in a 195-210 range for a little bit and then had a big day where it broke up out of that range and up towards $220. This was an unusual move that I noticed since it was on my watchlist, so I decided to make a play.
STOCK: WAYFAIR
2: Picking a direction:
So if we look at Wayfair’s YTD chart, it has exploded this year. A clear upward trend, but a recent trend that I noticed from following the stock was that every time it broke out like this, there would be a little bit of a pullback afterwards. Additionally, I felt the stock was overvalued on a fundamental basis (had a negative book value at the time of the trade) so I wanted to play this stock back down. This is probably the quickest and easiest step of the four, since you’ll likely already have an opinion on most of the stocks that you follow.
DIRECTION: DOWN
3:Picking a Strike Price:
So we know that we’re going to be playing Wayfair back down, but now the question is what spread are we going to set up to do that. In this example Wayfair was trading at $218.42 at the time that we decided to make this trade. In the video we illustrate a trading channel that Wayfair was at the top of. It was also approaching the ATH of $221.54. A lot of the time that will act as resistance for a stock, meaning it’ll bounce down off of it. So in order to give ourselves a bit of a cushion we decided to set our short leg at 222.50, meaning that we’re playing the stock to stay below $222.50 by the end of that week.
So with this play it means in plain English that if we’re correct and the stock goes down, we hit max profit. But if we’re wrong and it goes up, we still have a $4.08 cushion before we’re not hitting max profit anymore. So we could be a little wrong, have the stock go up a few dollars, and still walk away with max profit.
STRIKE PRICE OF SHORT LEG: $222.50
4: Executing the Trade:
I’ll be the first to tell you that when I started trading spreads I didn’t realize you could open both legs of the spread at was. I was stupid. I would like to think I’m at least a little bit smarter now. If you look at the options screen for most brokers, you’ll just see single legs. Switching over to “vertical” allows you to set up the entire spread in one trade. If you use something like RH, there’s a feature that allows you to select multiple options, so you’ll select the one you wish to sell (short leg) and the one you wish to buy (long leg).
In this example we selected the 222.5/227.5c spread, meaning that we sold the short leg of 222.5 and the long leg of 227.5. The net credit was 1.45, which is our max gain on the trade. A wider spread gives a larger credit but also increases max loss. This is a $5 wide spread but we could have made it a tighter spread with a $2.5 width. Typically the best risk to reward ratio is on the tightest spreads, but a slightly wider spread will raise your breakeven price and studies have shown that it actually results in better expected value long term.
Circling back to the credit we received of $1.45, this means that our max profit was $145 and our max loss was $355 for each spread that we sold. We know that because our broker tells us that, but a quick way to calculate it is the width of the spread minus the credit. A $1.45 credit on $5 wide spread means a $5-$1.45=$3.55 max loss.
When I evaluate trades like this I look for a max profit to max loss ratio of 1:2 to 1:4. Based on different scanners I’ve seen, the best expected values tend to fall on spreads within that risk/reward ratio. The ratio on this trade is 1:2.44.
So we put our order in for a credit of $1.45, it filled, and now we get to sit back and watch. Sometimes your order won’t fill right away. In fact, most of the time it won’t fill right away. It’s important to be patient with your fill price and not chase it downwards. We want the highest credit possible. So if the credit on these spreads dropped to 1.30 when I was trying to place an order, it usually isn’t a great idea to drop my order price down to 1.30 just to get a fill. The only time I would recommend that is if you’re trying to open a spread right before the market closes. Otherwise, hang tight. Patience pays.

Part 3: Managing the Trade

So now that we’ve made the trade, it’s time to manage it. In my opinion one of the best parts about trading spreads is that they don’t require active management. You get to sit back and watch the price. Once the trade has been opened, which is also quick, it takes very little effort.
So with the Wayfair example we used, our analysis turned out perfectly, as Wayfair touched the ATH and dipped back down to end the week safely at $214. We hit max profit on that trade, but what if the trade goes against us? That’s what we’ll take a look at in this section.
One thing we didn’t address in part two is when to open the trade. We like opening spreads on Mondays and Tuesdays, and monitoring them during the week. This is the part of my strategy that is a little bit controversial, as there is a (legitimate) school of thought that selling spreads about 45 DTE is better value. I like that idea and if you would rather do that then absolutely go for it. It’s important to trade what you’re comfortable with. All of the lessons in here still apply to that strategy. With that said though, I stick with the weekly strategy of opening them at the beginning of the week and look to close them throughout the week.
The way I see it, your % of max profit should be the metric you’re looking at when deciding what to do with a spread. Divided up equally, that means if you progressed through the week to max profit in a linear fashion, you would be at 20% of max profit on Monday, 40% on Tuesday, and so forth. A good rule of thumb I use is that if you’re ever on the fence about whether or not to close something out, do so if your return exceeds the linear return for that day of the week. The market can move quickly and I’ve had several times where I have regretted not closing a spread out. It’s important to take profit.
Another thing I’ll add to this is that this weekly strategy gets a little risky on Thursday afternoon headed into Friday. If your spread is remotely close to being in the money on Thursday afternoon, close it out. Now that I type that out I realize that may all sound a little convoluted, but it’s better visualized in the video I’ve linked for this section.
Now let's get into what happens if a trade really starts to move against you. With the strategy we use there are really two options: (1) Close the trade for a loss and move on, or (2) Roll the strikes higher.
The first option is pretty self explanatory, but a quick note I want to add here is that you can have a stock move way against you but still be able to close the trade for less than max loss. The example I use in my video is I played FB earnings, thought it would go down, but it shot way above my spread and well into max loss territory. We opened a 245/247.5c spread for a credit of $0.54. FB was reporting earnings on a Thursday night and we sold this spread that expired the following day, so there wasn’t a ton of time to manage it. Long story short, FB killed earnings and shot up to $256 that morning. Really not a prayer that it would come back down to the spread I opened by the end of the day. But despite the fact that this trade went way against us and we had almost no time to manage it since it was a Friday play, we were still able to close out for a debit of $1.90. Yes that’s a loss of $1.36 per spread, but we SAVED an additional $0.60 cent loss by avoiding a max loss debit of $2.50. That’s another benefit of spreads.
Let’s talk about option two. This is the best option to use if you’re confident that you’re correct about the ultimate price action on a stock, but you need a little extra wiggle room on the trade. For this example we’ll look at a TSLA call spread that I opened. TSLA was trading at $1542 after an incredible run, so I figured I would play it below 1600 with a 1600/1610c spread that offered a credit of $2.52. As is the theme with this section, TSLA exploded the following morning (Tuesday) and went all the way up to $1794 at one point. My spread was literally almost $200 out of the money. One of the biggest possible moves against myself that I had ever seen. Despite this crazy move, it was only Tuesday and we were able to close the first spread for a debit of only $5.25 (as opposed to a $10 max debit). We opened 6 of these off the bat so this was a loss of $1638. From there we “rolled” our strikes higher, opening 10 1750/1760c spreads for a credit of $3.45. So the closing and subsequent opening of a spread like we did here is what we are referring to when we say we “rolled the strikes higher”.
By the end of the week TSLA had finally crashed a bit and it finished at $1506. This meant the second of spreads we opened were easily max profit. And while we lost $1,638 on the first set of spreads we opened here, we profited $3,450 on the second set of spreads so we were able to still finish the week with a $1,812 profit on TSLA. The funny thing with this one is that the original spread would have hit max profit since it dropped all the way back down to 1500, but we would have had the same result had TSLA finished anywhere below 1750.
Rolling the strikes higher gave me extra breathing room and turned a potential disaster into a profitable trade. One thing I’ll add though is that with this method you do run the risk of increasing your potential max loss. Because of that, I’ll only roll my strikes higher ONCE. Anything past that is chasing a losing trade. If I roll my strikes higher and it’s still going against me, I’m at the point where I need to accept the fact that I don’t fundamentally understand a stock as well as I thought I did and move on. There is always another trade out there.
The final point I’ll add to this is ALWAYS CLOSE OUT YOUR SPREADS. The only time I’ll let a spread expire worthless is if my spread is OTM by a crazy amount and it would quite literally take a historic after-hours move on Friday to take me back ITM. Other than that, close your spreads out. Even if it’s just for a $0.05 debit. It may seem annoying but I’ll tell you why in the following section.

Part 4: Additional Risks and Considerations

I will start this section by saying I’ve never been impacted by any of the following risks, but it’s important to be aware of 100% of the possible outcomes of your trade before you enter it. They’re infrequent but this really wouldn’t be a comprehensive guide if I omitted them. They are as follows: (1) Early Assignment, (2) Dividend Risk, (3) Pin Risk.
1: Early Assignment:
The best way to start this section is by talking about why your max loss is actually your max loss. We know it’s quickly calculated as the width of your spread minus the credit, but why is that?
Let’s use a 110/115c spread as an example. We’ll say we received a credit of $1. We know that if the stock finishes anywhere below 110 then both legs are worthless and we’ll hold onto that $1 credit. But what happens if we’re in a max loss position. Let’s say the stock finishes at $120.
In this situation the short leg (110c) we sold would be worth $10 (120-110), meaning that we would owe $1,000 on that position. The long leg we bought would be worth $5 (120-115), meaning we are holding a position worth $500. The net effect is a $500 loss, but remember that’s netted against the $100 credit you received, so it’s a max loss of $400. That math checks out as the width of the spread is $5, the credit is $1, so the max loss is 5-1=$4*100=$400.
So that’s how it works upon expiration. But lets say this position moved against you, you still have a few days until expiration, but the stock is at $120. Since there are a few days left, you probably could close the contract for a debit of $3.50 rather than the max loss debit of $5. However, since your short leg is ITM the person you sold the option to may choose to exercise their option. As a result, that would require you to take on a short position of $110*100=$11,000 per contract sold. You may not be able to afford to cover that, or your broker may not let you hold that position. So what happens is your long leg gets exercised as well resulting in you taking a max loss early. So while on paper you received a credit of $1 that could have been closed for a debit of $3.50 and your loss was only $2.50, early assignment results in you prematurely taking a max loss.
When does this happen? It typically doesn’t, since it requires the buyer sacrificing the remaining extrinsic value on the option, but it’s more likely with certain stocks. There are three different classifications of a stock that relate to it’s borrowing ability: Easy to Borrow (ETB), Hard to Borrow (HTB), and Not Available to Borrow (NTB). The harder a stock is to borrow, the more likely it is that a call is exercised early because it gives the buyer a way to acquire a stock which may not be available to them through their broker. So if you’re selling call spreads that are close to being ITM, make sure to check out the borrowing status of the stock.
2: Dividend Risk:
This risk relates to the first one discussed, as it’s just another way you risk early assignment. If a company is announcing a dividend, there will be something known as an “ex-div” date, which means that all shareholders as of that date are entitled to receive the divident, which will be distributed usually at a later date. Because of this, call buyers may exercise an out of the money call option in an effort to acquire those shares.
Remembering that exercising an option means that you sacrifice all remaining extrinsic value, another reason a buyer may exercise a call option before an ex-dividend date is that the value of the dividend announced is greater than the extrinsic value remaining in the option. Say a 100c is trading at $2 and the underlying (stock) is currently at 101. The extrinsic value is the value of the option in excess of what it would be worth upon expiration. So the extrinsic value in this situation is $1, since the 100c trading for $2 is just $1 in excess of the current strike price. If the company in question here announced a $2 dividend, an option buyer would likely exercise their call option because the $2 dividend is greater than the $1 of extrinsic value.
3: Pin Risk:
We know that if your spread finishes out of the money it’s a max gain and if both legs of your spread finish in the money it’s a max loss. But what happens when the price of a stock finishes between the two legs of your spread? Let’s take a look.
So using a 100/110c spread as an example, let’s say that the stock finishes at 105. Your long leg, which is there to protect you, is worthless so you wouldn’t exercise it. However the short leg at 100 that you sold will be exercised by the buyer since it’s ITM. As a result, you’re now short 100 shares at a price of 100 and you’ll be holding that position over the weekend. This can go both ways from here, but since we’re focused on risk let’s say that this stock you’re now short shoots up over the weekend and some sort of news/event brings it up to $120.
With this short position of 100 shares at $100 you’re borrowing $10,000 worth of stock. Now that the stock is worth $120 this position is now worth $12,000. Over the weekend you’ve sustained a $2,000 loss. If we received a credit of $3 when we opened this spread, we may have thought that our max loss was 10-3=$7*100=$700. Since we failed to close the spread out, this position has now resulted in a $2,000 loss net of the $300 credit that you received when you opened the position. So on a trade where you thought you could lose at most $700, you’re now down almost $2k.
I can’t repeat it enough, but THIS IS WHY WE CLOSE OUT SPREADS BEFORE EXPIRATION. That is the single most important takeaway I can give you here. Spreads are great since they’re defined risk and defined gain. When you’re buying options you have a defined loss but a potentially infinite gain. This can make it really easy to get greedy and I’ve seen countless traders lose big profits because they keep holding out for more. When you have a defined gain and defined loss it makes it easier to make smart decisions, take profits, and continuously build on those profits over time.
That was an enormous wall of text but I hope it helps explain, from a base level, what spreads are and how they work. Switching from buying options to selling options has dramatically changed my performance in the market so I hope sharing this can do the same for someone else. If you have any questions let me know and I’d be happy to answer them.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I already posted the first quarter of this story. If you saw it at that time you can scroll down to the bold italic paragraph and begin reading there.

“What the hell is wrong with your ship?”
Non-human comm discipline isn’t quite as good as the human equivalent. As I understand it, they never had to deal with the crackling early radios that informed our procedures. Sure, on most worlds, when a communication spell was first developed it was the domain of a high priest or archmage, but it was clear.
Still, I’d expected a slightly better introduction to the local traffic control net than a half panicked voice asking a question that made no sense. “This is Frontier helm control. All ship systems reporting nominal. To whom am I speaking?”
I glanced down at my board after I finished speaking. The ship systems were reporting nominal by not activating any shrieking klaxons or flashing lights. But with a few pokes to the controls in front of me, I was able to project a little hologram of the ship status. Everything was outlined in happy green.
“Nominal! I’m registering explosions at your aft end.” The speaker still didn’t identify himself and he still sounded panicked.
I reached out, ‘grabbed’ the hologram, rotated it around to view the back side of the ship, and then zoomed in until I was looking at fairly low-level systems. I wasn’t as far down as I could go. The ship would happily report on the status of individual circuit boards and breakers, but I was surely low enough that I could see anything that a local space station could see. Some components were haloed in light green rather than dark green, but that only meant they were coming up on a service date.
I drummed my fingers against the control board mentally debating if I should launch a drone for an external view or if I should respond with ‘everything’s good’ a second time. On the one hand, whoever I was talking to was probably looking at me in a freaking scrying mirror and shouting into a pointy hat or something so there was seriously no way they’d have noticed something that the ship’s sensors hadn’t. On the other hand, I didn’t want to end up in textbooks as an example of why only a jackass would ignore panicked warnings from traffic control.
Then the hologram changed. A tiny icon shaped like an idealized hydrogen atom exited the back of the ship, a dozen lines lanced out at it, and a flare of fire blossomed behind the ship’s pusher plate. Because I was paying attention I felt the ship give a tiny shudder as we decelerated very slightly.
“There it is! There is again! I just saw a huge explosion behind your ship.”
“Oh, sorry. You’re registering our drive system control. All systems are nominal and everything is under control.”
This, at least, seemed to calm the alien traffic control operator down a tiny bit. He...
Well, I was assuming it was a male from the pitch of its voice. Translation spells are nicer than the computerized equivalent. They tend to give speakers roughly the voice the listener would expect given the nature of the speaker even if the original ‘speech’ was in the form of wild tentacle gesticulations and skin color changes via some alien squid thing. This voice was sort of nasal and high, but definitely male.
He at least listened to me this time, “You’re telling me your ship is deliberately firing off a series of huge fireballs? Is that safe?”
“Perfectly safe, control. You’re seeing laser triggered fusion pulses. They’re as clean as mother’s milk.” That wasn’t strictly true. Even laser pumped fusion makes some tritium. But it’s not very hot and the half-life is short enough that even if some mutant atoms end up in a planet’s upper atmosphere they aren’t going to hurt anyone.
“None of that translated.” The speaker's voice had become more nasal and somewhat accusatory as though I had any control over what its spells could or could not translate. “But if that’s your drive then don’t come any closer. I need to talk to someone about this.”
Then the line cut off. “Control! Control! That’s not how this works. The explosions are my brakes.”
I didn’t get any response.
* * *
I should probably back up enough for a little context.
Mankind made contact with extraterrestrial life for the first time when the Oohmahlock’s enormous crystalline spaceship floated out of the sky and set down in the wilds of Alaska. There was a lot of turmoil in response to that, of course, but the strangest part came when they told us why they were on Earth and how they’d gotten there: pure faith had carried them through space faster than a beam of light, and they were here to tell humanity of our divine mission.
We hadn’t believed them on either count. Tackling their technology seemed easier than tackling their belief system, so we’d set about examining everything they were willing to show us absolutely certain that it was standard tech that they didn’t understand and had thus reduced to superstition. Perhaps the ship had been built long before it had been piloted to Earth by a now fallen civilization.
It was not. Long story short it was not. The Oohmahlock allowed us to examine their technology in any way we requested. They knew what would happen before we started. We found nothing capable of doing anything in it and as soon as we looked closely at it the tech stopped functioning.
Next, the Oohmahlock explained how the ship had been built. And, indeed, they had built it themselves. The crystals that made it up were grown over the course of three generations nurtured by the prayers of their entire civilization. A holy order of monks was founded to slowly shape the crystals into livable spaces and workable power focuses. And, when the end of construction was finally in sight, a dozen times as many traveler priests as was normally needed were taught the chants and hymns of fast travel and breathable air. The very best of that group was selected to pilot the ship and only with this extraordinary effort were they able to land a ship on Earth, and then only by keeping it well away from most of the population.
Then they explained humanity’s divine mission. In the beginning, god created the universe. He created the races therein and to them he gave the ability to adjust the rules of reality so that they might not perish under the iron fist of physics. The races of the vastness grew proud. They called their powers magic and said that the wonders they worked were of will and mind rather than through faith. So, on a planet with more iron in its heart than any other, a race with cold iron in its very blood was born. To this race was given special magic; a magic that enforced the rules of the creator. This race would humble the works of the magi and test even the faithful.
This time god wasn’t screwing around. We would assert the rules of reality whenever we examined something. Humans didn’t get a choice in that.
So that was our mission. To survive and travel. Of course, most people thought that was a load of crap. There was even a contingent of people sufficiently contrary (or self-loathing) that said we shouldn’t travel the galaxy. However, the general reaction was, “There’s a great big fantastic universe out there and you’re going to help us get to it? Well praise the alien lord and pass the booster rockets!”
A new space race was on.
It eventually produced three key technologies that gave mankind the stars: laser lifters, the Orion drive, and the Orion two. Laser lifters were the simplest. If you focus a sufficiently powerful beam into a ‘thruster’ that’s essentially nothing more than a durable black cup then all the air inside flashes to plasma and the cup is tossed upwards. Do that a few thousand times and the cup, as well as anything attached to it, is in space without the brutal constraints imposed by the device having to haul its own fuel with it.
All of the research into lasers let us crack fusion. We were massively aided in this by having allies who could magically mine metallic hydrogen from gas giants. We probably could have built Orion’s with fission devices, but it was an almost perfect drive with laser pumped pulse fusion.
The Orion Two wasn’t related to the Orion Drive from an engineering standpoint but…
* * *
The bridge radio clicked on again and brought me the still nasal and slightly frustrated sounding voice of control. “OK, I talked to my boss, who talked to his boss, who talked to diplomatic affairs. For some reason, I’ve got to let your doom machine approach. So, here you go, park it there and try not to blow up. Well, not any more than you already are.”
The hologram of the ship was replaced with a holographic representation of the parking orbit Control wanted the Frontier to take up. I thought, not for the first time, that the translation spells used by most races really are amazing. Control had probably put a voodoo doll of the Frontier into a scale model of the system expecting a diagram to show up in my scrying bowl or some such. But, because of the translation spell, the information made it to me in a format that the ship’s computer could interpret. Better yet, because the spell was acting on their communication and not my reception the human anti-magic field couldn’t turn it off.
There was a sharp crack of static and the hologram in front of me shifted to a bunch of juvenile squid aliens playing a game that looked a lot like dodgeball. One of those allies, a small and awkward one even to my human eyes, was getting the worst of it. Several other beings were pelting it mercilessly with balls and each of them was using more than one tentacle at a time. Then that image started to fuzz and break up.
I quickly looked away from the hologram. Modern comms training includes a fairly extensive section on not thinking too hard about just how aliens who have never discovered radio are speaking to you. The human anti-magic field always gets a vote if you catch its attention.
Let’s see, the bastard over at control had stuck me in his system’s L2 point. L2 is way out past the moon and it’s gravitationally unstable. If I’d just gotten a normal parking orbit I could have shut off the ship's engines and taken some much-needed rack time. But, oh no, because Control thought I was going to blow up I was going to have to periodically correct the ship’s position. On top of that, I suspected the Orion Drive was too powerful for that work. It would be like trying to make a golf putt with a sledgehammer, so I’d have to run our maneuvering thrusters way more than they were really designed for.
I looked back down at the holo. It was back to being a display of Frontier's parking space. “Parking orbit acknowledged Control,” I said through clenched teeth.
There was a long silence and I thought maybe Control had wandered off without telling me for a moment. Then the line went live again and control spoke hesitantly, “So why is your trip that important, anyway?”
I ran my tongue across my teeth wondering just how to answer that. We were in a Von system. The Von were a race of mighty wizards of the sort that Humanity was sent to humble and bring low. We’d been doing a great job of that. The Von had a lot of desire for human consumer goods. Our technology filled niches their magic handled poorly and anyone could use it without training. Yet all we could buy from them was raw materials. Their military was nearly useless against us because we shrugged off their most potent death magic like it had never been cast; they could throw a rock at us or telekinetically fire an arrow, but that was only if they caught us off guard. So a species with 100 planets to their name was having to normalize diplomatic relations with a single planet species as though we were total equals.
I wasn’t exactly shocked the Von leaders hadn’t publicized this meeting well enough for Control to be ready for us. I also wasn’t going to give away their secrets. “Just some trade negotiations.”
Control’s only reply was a sigh so thick with annoyance that I actually started to feel for the guy. Embarrassing or not the local traffic control facilities really should have been told they were going to be dealing with a completely alien spaceship. No one ever thinks of the little guy.
Again I thought control had signed off without announcing it but he came back one last time. “OK, I’ve got to ask. You’re using fireballs to push yourself around space, which is still nuts, but I learned back in school only one or two really special spells can move something faster than light. Pyromancy definitely doesn’t do it! So how did you make the interstellar leg of your trip?”
* * *
The Orion Two wasn’t related to the Orion Drive from an engineering standpoint but they were philosophical and spiritual brothers. Humanity couldn’t learn directly from the Oohmahlock but we could stand way over there with a particle detector while they used miracles to torment space-time, and the Oohmahlock just loved to do that for us because they basically saw it as helping angels learn god’s will.
Eventually, we learned to make a G.E.C.; a gravity emitting circuit. Because the electroweak force is so much stronger than the gravitational force it’s possible to supercharge one of those until it very briefly becomes a singularity. If you toss such an artificial black hole in front of a ship, and lace enough G.E.Cs through the ship that the force gradient across it is even so you don’t get spaghettified, you’ve got an FTL drive. Better yet if you use a second artificial singularity inside the first, or a third in the second, or a fourth in the third and so on you can go really really fast indeed.
It annoys physicists and mathematicians because they can’t even begin to describe where the ship is after that bit of fuckery, but the tech tested as safe. At least it’s safe for human equipment and Earth life.
It’s not so safe for Oohmahlock. We learned that when one of their high priests took a historic first ride on one of our ‘Holy Vessels’. They started screaming and they didn’t stop until a faith healer wiped their memory. Their whole memory. The high priest was left as little more than a mentally damaged infant and everyone agreed the cure was way better than the disease.
The most sensible thing the priest said while it still had its memories was, “They can see me! They can see me! They can see you, but you can’t see them! They can touch me but they can’t touch you! You can touch them! Save me, save me, save me! Will you save me?”
The official human explanation is that the Oohmahlock have some sort of subconscious connection to the normal universe that allows them to achieve the things they can do. Taking them so far out of the normal universe causes a form of stress that can damage their minds.
The official Oohmahlock explanation is that some sort of horrible thing is looking into our universe from outside and maybe they were wrong about just what humanity needs to do. Perhaps we aren’t just supposed to annoy wizards. Maybe we need to fly around in the high warp bands acting like border guards for reality. Their church is in a bit of a state of flux.
I’d just spent a month in those warp bands and the only danger I’d felt was boredom, so I don’t know what to think. It is nice to imagine that my mind set a big brace down the spine of reality itself, but it’s kind of far fetched.
What I do know is there’s no way I was going to explain any of that to Control. I’d end up with a parking orbit in a neighboring star system. Or maybe he’d just tell me to go in for a landing on the system’s sun.
* * *
“Um, the force of will,” I answered into the radio. “Yeah, pure will power. Everyone on the ship just wants to go faster than light really badly and then we go faster than light.”
“Oh, well good. At least you’ve got a sensible FTL drive. Geez, you should just get that working in-system. Way better than those fireballs. Anyway, your approach vector is clear. Perform a sending if you need anything. Control out.”
* * *
The talks with the Von went well. The biggest incident was when one of the younger secretaries attached to the delegation lost all of her magical cosmetics. She had apparently been wearing a lot of them and apparently her coworkers hadn’t known.
I keep saying ‘apparently’ because the Von aren’t a race to inspire lust in humans. They kind of look like someone shoved a rudimentary skeleton into a squid. They have a skull on an invertebrate neck-stalk, an abbreviated rib-cage analog, and bones for added leverage in 4 of their 8 limbs. They can casually slip a lot of those bones out of joint sacrificing strength and speed for flexibility.
It also makes them look a bit like a deep-sea creature that has inexplicably fallen off a skyscraper. Not great model material.
The whole makeup incident had some positive side effects. The Von use a lot of medical magic at the end of their lives. Once everyone had gotten a visceral example of how hard and fast magic evaporates under the inspection of a room full of skeptical humans our scheduled meetings with some of the more senior staff were canceled. It would’ve been bad for the discussions if the head of the embassy screamed and collapsed into dust.
Second, it gave Control and me something to gossip about. He proved to be a pretty good guy even if he was uptight about human tech, and neither of us was very busy as the port was mostly shut down for the big meeting. We passed the time comparing cultures, swapping stories, and griping about our bosses. Or ‘building an intercultural rapport’ as I put it in my status reports.
* * *
“I said goodbye to my parents last night. Father was brave, but it almost pushed me over the edge when my mother began to cry,” Control said out of the blue.
Well, he didn’t say anything of the kind. He made a series of pops, squeaks, and clicks that the human ear could barely follow, and it would have been quite a huge coincidence if the Von cry. But I had my translator set to dynamic equivalence. As such, that was what I heard and there was no robotic voice breaking into his words to explain, ‘explosive flatulence is an expression of sadness for the Von,’ or whatever.
“Buddy, you’re going to be fine! Your people wouldn’t want to trade for our warp drives if they weren’t safe. And you’ve given us, what, like 10 whole planets if this works.”
“If! And my people aren’t thinking clearly. What is the horrible death of a single comms operator if it might alleviate the biggest weakness of our magic?”
Control could be a downer sort of squid. We were still calling each other ‘Control’ and ‘Helm’ because he couldn’t pronounce ‘Jeff’ and I couldn’t pronounce ‘engine that really needs oiled’ sounds.
I cast about for something to distract him and found it in the form of a rather grand Von in the corner of the room. He had on robes stitched with precious materials and held a quartz staff shot with veins of natural gold surmounted by a huge ruby. He was wearing a very grand hat though it actually looked more like a sombrero than the pointy thing humans associated with fictional wizards.
“Alright, even if your people would throw you to the wolves that guy is pretty important and magically experienced. He wouldn’t get onto this ship if all non-humans were doomed would he?”
“The high mage is the foremost master of spatial magics, so yeah he’s pretty important. He also has considerable faith in his own abilities. Perhaps enough so that he would underestimate the risk.” Despite his words, Control’s simulated tone sounded a bit less stressed.
I felt I was on the right track to comfort him. “This stuff is also pretty good, right? Some sort of magic armor?”
Control and I were hanging plates of enchanted material the Von had provided around one of the aft cargo bays like it was so much drywall. However, even to a complete mundy like me, it appeared to be fancy stuff. It was pattern welded like Demsasus steel. Only the patterns in it were magical runes and half a dozen materials had been woven together in its construction.
Control sniffed in an offended way, “‘Pretty good!’ ‘Magical armor!’ I’ll have you know, this is the best anti-magic armor in the known universe. This,’ He stroked it almost reverently, “enforces the rules of reality such that no spell may travel through it. This material accounts for some of the vast might of the Von military as well as the fact that our natural philosophy is far more advanced than any other race. It will contain a bubble of the real universe even in the face of your horrific drive system!”
Control was sounding a bit more like himself so I let him slide on referring to their iron age understanding of the laws of reality as ‘advanced.’ Instead I looked back at the magical plating. It was basically a weak version of the human effect. Interesting. No wonder they were letting me touch it. I’d thought that was just a sort of stress test, but this might be a spell humans couldn’t break. Or could we? Actually, it was probably best not to think about that question in case the answer was, “Yes.”
The High Wizard chose that moment to provide something better for more to think about. He was still over by his crate, but now he was loudly chanting something my translator couldn’t handle while he twisted his tentacles and limbs into all manner of strange shapes. That went on for a moment then, with a triumphal air that carried across species, he slammed his staff into the deck and the big gem on top flashed. With growing excitement, I realized I was watching magic.
The pallet of material in front of the wizard heaved itself off the ground and wobbled unsteadily about half a foot in the air for a moment. I started to mouth, “Cool!” Then the entire load slammed back into the ground with a crash that sounded like it couldn’t have been good for whatever was inside.
The high wizard slumped, and let me tell you, a being whose skeleton is mostly optional can really slump. Then he turned around in that slow ‘did anyone see that’ way of a being who has just realized their fly is open and hurriedly fixed it in public.
When he saw me he stiffened and pointed an angry appendage, “Human! You are rendering it impossible to work! Begone!”
I drew in breath for some sort of retort. I’m not sure what it would’ve been. Something so clever and scathing it would have set diplomatic relations back decades, probably. But then I felt the weight of Control’s tentacle on my shoulder. I looked back at him.
“Perhaps it would be best if you return to your duties elsewhere. We are well ahead of our schedule due to your wondrous ‘electric screwdrivers’ which penetrate the anti-magic plate where our most potent tools fail. It will ease the High Wizards work if he can once again access his spells.”
The High Wizard could have accessed a hand truck as far as I was concerned, but we were nearly done so I just nodded. “Alright, call me if you have any problems.”
* * *
“Comm check, medical bay here,” I spoke into the comms panel in the med bay. It was my station for our test flight. There were half a dozen Von soldiers lying unconscious in the beds. Half of them had been tranquilized via human medical science, half with magic. Human medical personnel buzzed around them.
“Um, this is the converted cargo bay. Oh, bay A-3. Can you hear me? Did I activate this correctly?”
“You’re on. Do it just like that if you need to send any messages.”
“Bridge here. Your headset should be listen-only on our general channel and I’ve got the wall panel hooked to Captain’s priority. Is it all coming in?”
I cocked my head and listened to the prelaunch chatter for a moment on that device. It was all coming in clearly. At the moment they were working through the end of the “Station Ready” checklist. That meant we were less than 5 minutes from getting underway. “It’s all coming in,” I told the bridge via the wall panel.
“Very good. Bridge over.”
I leaned back on the wall and felt minor shudders go through it as the first of the fusion pulses went off. We were moving farther away from everything so we could go FTL. It was somewhat strange to be doing nothing during this part of the flight as I would normally be at my busiest. At the moment my job was to have no job. That way I could keep track of where we were in OUR flight sequence so I’d know how long it was to the end of the flight and what our window was on an emergency abort while simultaneously being available to Control and the medical staff if anything went pear-shaped on their ends.
For fifteen minutes, we traveled through normal space and everything went smoothly. The magical sleepers stayed asleep and the medicated sleepers stayed healthy. Control reported back to his superiors magically and me via the comms system. He even admitted that fusion explosions were a softer means of propulsion than he’d expected.
I heard we were at a minimum safe distance on the general channel so opened the channel back to control and spoke into it and the room in general, “Alright everyone, we’re about to go superluminal. Fifteen minutes out. Fifteen minutes back.”
The anesthesiologist gave me the thumbs up, but everyone else in the room kept their eyes glued to their tasks.
“Grace of Magic, protect and provide in this my hour of need,” Control murmured over the comms. I doubted I was expected to comment on that.
Going FTL in a human ship feels a bit like getting pushed and poked from a half dozen directions at once as the gravitational stabilizers spin up hard enough to prevent spaghettification and then self-tune until the local gravity field is nice and even again. I felt that, heard a series of agitated clicks over the comms, and then everything went back to normal. I looked around at the brightly lit medical space and the still apparently peaceful Von laying in it. They seemed good. I thumbed open the channel to the converted cargo bay, “Control, how are you liking the ride?”
“Was it meant to feel like someone was tugging on my spleen for a moment then smooth out?”
“Yeah, that’s about right.”
“In that case, my situation remains nominal…”
Control’s all clear report cut out suddenly as two things happened simultaneously. First, there was a loud bang and a thick cloud of white acrid smoke rolled out of the communications panel in front of me. Second, all three of the magically tranquilized soldiers began to jerk and seize.
“Shit,” the anesthesiologist swore. Then she looked over at me, “Let the bridge know we’re going to need to abort.” She immediately turned back to her work either not noticing the panel in front of me was dead or deciding that was my problem. Doctors are focused like that.
The touch screen of the comms panel was dark, but I gave it a couple of good jabs with my thumb anyway hoping that it would wake back up. It didn’t, so I took off running out of medical and down the hall to the bridge. The Frontier is bigger than most people picture when they think, ‘spaceship’ but it was still going to be faster to run across it than it was to fix the comms.
Only it wasn’t. The first bulkhead door I came to was shut, which isn’t normal, and its motion sensor ignored my approach, which is even odder.
All the bulkhead doors have a little screen next to them. Under ordinary circumstances, they display an identifier and can provide a little map of the ship if you’re lost. During a depressurization event, which is the only thing that should have made the door fail shut, they’re supposed to display environmental status for the corridor beyond and allow for the door to be manually opened. Only now the screen was dark and there were scorch marks on the panel above it.
I gave the screen a punch, more out of anger than any hope that it would wake up. It didn’t wake up. It did fall off the wall. I looked into the recess beyond it and found a small scattering of black powder as well as the remnants of what looked like a crystal and maybe a couple of liquids. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at, but the crystal sure seemed like Von magic and the black stuff could have been gunpowder.
Down the hall, the anesthesiologist poked her head out of the med bay, “Hey, we’ve got the Von under again, but we’re getting some odd readings. It’s like they’ve all started to have nightmares. What’s going on with the abort?”
“Sabotage I think! We’re still superluminal.” My receive only headset was fine and still connected to the bridge so I knew we were four levels deep and holding with all systems green. They hadn’t noticed the link to the medical bay was dead yet. “There are panels in all of these rooms. Maybe I can…”
My clever plan to make the call from a different phone was interrupted by a huge explosion from the direction of the cargo bay. This one definitely wasn’t caused by black powder. Instead of a bang the sound of it was like a super high pitched tuning fork being struck and flashes of black light strobed all around us for a moment.
I felt nothing, of course, but someone in the medical bay yelled, “Fuck! What the hell was that? It’s hitting the Von hard; Ann we need you!”
Ann shot me a look, then vanished back into medical without speaking. We were close to the cargo bay, and I knew it had a commlink. So I sprinted in that direction planning to call in the abort from there once I had the full situation.
Fortunately, the door to the cargo bay was open. The screen next to it was glitching and there was a black stain on the wall above it, but whatever had happened hadn’t been enough to make it fail shut. I sprinted through without slowing.
The bay itself was a mess. The anti-magic paneling was fine, and the human equipment looked about like it always had, but all of the Von’s crates were scattered like they’d been hit by a strong wind. Control was laying in one corner making an undulating squealing sound I’d never heard from him before. My translator couldn’t do anything with it, but it sounded like distress to me.
“Buddy, are you OK. What’s going on?”
“I am… I feel… It’s like magic is looking directly at me. I feel like it’s judging me. Inspecting me. I can function. The plating helps, but this is most unpleasant.”
“Was that what that flash was?”
“No that was,” then the English from my translator dissolved into clicks and pops as it found a term it couldn’t handle. Most likely it was some technical explanation of whatever magical thing had just happened. “I must check on the High Wizard.”
The Frontier's cargo bays are modular and can be configured with extra walls and dividers at need. That’s what we’d done for this experiment: we’d set up one chamber that was the correct size for the amount of anti-magic plating the Von provided and a second unshielded chamber where the High Wizard could work freely. Control was looking at the door between them. It had been mostly covered by crates when the Von equipment was thrown around.
“The door servos are pretty strong. If you can squeeze your way over to the control panel they’ll be able to push that stuff out of the way.”
“I can do that,” Control said and the translator gave him a confident tone. Then he started popping his ribs out of joint and I had to look away as his entire torso crumpled up like an old sock that had been used to store nails. (No, I have no idea why someone would store nails in an old sock, but if the mental image of a being looking like that is unpleasant you’re on the right track.)
I walked over to the comm panel and, at last, found something that hadn’t been inexpertly blown up. It was showing that the link to the medical bay had cut out unexpectedly, which I already knew. I cleared that error and connected it to the bridge instead.
As soon as the channel was open, the bridge officer started speaking, “Cargo bay? What’s happening back there? Medical is offline.”
“This is Jeff. Medical has problems. I need an emergency abort.”
There was some garbled, but energetic, discussion on the other end of the line that I couldn’t quite follow, and then the bridge came back, “I’ve signaled it, but we’re in band transition. I’ll need five minutes to get us back to flat-space.”
Across the room, there was a whine of stressed servos, but when I looked back the door to the High Wizard’s chamber was open. “OK, I’m going to check on the High Wizard. I should be back with his status in 30 seconds. If you need me sooner, I’ve still got the general channel in ‘receive only’.”
“Roger.”
What I didn’t tell the bridge, because they couldn’t do anything about it at the moment, was that I suspected the High Wizard’s status was ‘traitorous bastard.’ Someone had set all of those black powder charges and when I looked over at Control I found him pressed up against a film of blue light which now filled the door.
“It’s a magical shield!”
I drew the sidearm I’d been issued before we let a half dozen soldiers and an alien wizard onto the ship. “Magical shields aren’t fucking real.” The shield popped like a soap bubble and Control went stumbling into the High Wizard’s chamber.
I ran to the door, crouched down, and looked around it with my head low to the ground so I wouldn’t provide a ready target. The scene beyond the door was like something out of a DnD game. There was a circle drawn on the floor in the milky blue-white fluid Von use for blood. Crystals, each one emitting enough black light that my uniform was fluorescing, were set at regular intervals around the outside of the circle. There was a ring of symbols on the inside. I can’t read Vonish script. They could have said anything, but they were glowing a nasty sickly green. The high wizard was on the outside of the circle on the far side of the room. Right after I arrived at the door he finished a chant that my translator couldn’t handle and turned to face Control who was sprawled on the floor.
The real piece de resistance of the whole scene was what looked like an extra-large Von made of glowing green light in the center of the circle.
We all froze for a second, but the High wizard recovered fastest. “So, you survived the,” my translator dropped a word, “that’s most impressive. You must have considerably more magical talent than I gave you credit for.”
“What are you doing,” Control demanded.
“I am gaining power. The power we need to ensure the Von place in the universe. Power far more potent than Human scraps. I can’t let you interfere.” With that, he raised his staff and snapped out an untranslatable word. A bolt of power lanced out of the staff and flew across the room. In his prone position, Control never had a chance at dodging. The bolt caught him squarely and he slumped back down as a nasty burnt fish smell filled the air.
The Wizard wasn’t holding any weapon beyond his staff that I could see. I stood, trained my sidearm on his chest, and stepped into the doorway. “Please put the staff down, and I will escort you to the bridge.” I glanced down at the still form of my friend, “You have considerable diplomatic immunity for what you’ve done thus far but I would strongly advise you not to push it any farther.”
He said his word again, only this time the spell was pointed at me and there wasn’t so much as a flicker in the crystal of the staff. “Put down the staff,” I said around clenched teeth.
“Oh please, allow me,” a third voice said. It was very cultured and smooth and it came from the center of the circle. When I looked, I saw that the figure of light had transformed itself from a Von to a handsome Human male. It was wearing a suit and it was built on a scale such that its head nearly brushed the ceiling.
It flicked its hand out at the High Wizard and the High Wizard turned inside out. That was nasty. The Wizard's jaws yawned wide and it started to let out a pained squeal. Then, with a crack, they jerked just a bit wider and filled with blueish tissue that must have come from somewhere inside the being. Over the next 15 seconds, more of its insides fountained through its mouth until they were all outside and it was nothing but an unidentifiable blob of flesh laying on the floor.
I opened my mouth. I suppose I wanted to say something, but if anything came out it was only a little whimper.
The thing did not appear to be overly concerned with what it had done, because it began speaking in a completely casual and urbane tone. “You are something very interesting. He was a sleeper who dreamt a dream not of this place. But you…. Hmmm, I can’t tell if you’re a dream of the one who dreamt of all of this or if maybe you just happened. Still, you are completely awake. I dare say we have quite a bit to offer each other. Would you like to be able to change all of this like that thing could before I killed it?”
“You’re offering me magic? Just like that.”
“Just like that! Well, there’s a certain resonance I’d need to achieve by killing the other beings on this ship. I can explain why later, but you need to decide quickly. I can feel you falling away from me and your nature is pushing me away. I don’t think one of your type could ever get me back on your own.”
I know a couple of TV show tough guy lines like, ‘here’s my decision’ or ‘is this quick enough for you’ ran through my head, but I’m pretty sure I just robotically trained my weapon on him and pulled the trigger without saying anything. My sidearm is a standard Gravitational Compression Gun. It fired a pulse of gravitational energy which compressed a meter wide column of air between me and the target into a centimetre wide beam of burning white plasma. Then a second pulse rippled down the plasma and slammed it into the target. There was a crack like thunder as the air collapsed back in on itself and my eyes were left slightly dazzled.
The GC gun does horrible things to any living target it hits. It’s not quite as hard on Outer Horrors but they don’t like it. The simulacrum of a man let out a bellow of rage and wavered for a moment before stabilizing again.
“Fine,” it snapped then raised its hand and made a gesture like it had at the High Wizard. I felt a painfully sharp tug at my jaw and stomach simultaneously, but it faded before it could even work my jaws open.
I squeezed the trigger of my GC again and the thing waved under another onslaught of plasma, but it only seemed like a momentary inconvenience for it. Worse yet, I could hear someone saying something about slow warp band collapse on the bridge general channel. We were having a hard time coming out of FTL. That’s not completely unusual, and no one on the bridge was that worried. With the context I had, it seemed bad.
The man shape made a different gesture then joined its two hands together such that its thumbs and fingers touched in front of it making a little triangle. A bar of silver light shot out of the triangle and slammed into my chest. It felt like an icicle stabbing into me, and I staggered backward. When I looked down frost coated the front of my uniform and a small patch of blood it. Still, the thing had a shocked look on its face and I had to assume that was because I was still standing.

SEE MY COMMENT FOR THE LAST BIT.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I've posted in a few other related subs and I've gotten this build collectively from different recommendations. I just want to make sure I'm optimizing and maxing what I get at my price point, and if this is not a good build please point me in the best direction. Thanks for taking the time!
